Congratulations on achieving your A Level results! If the prospect of navigating university choices feels a bit overwhelming right now, take a deep breath – you’re not alone in this journey. This guide has been crafted with your concerns in mind, aiming to offer comprehensive assistance and thoughtful guidance as you embark on the next exciting chapter of your academic journey.
Universities
In the realm of higher education, you have a range of options, from esteemed local universities like Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) to private institutions like James Cook University and Duke-NUS Medical School.
When making your choice, consider the courses that align with your interests, evaluate university fees, and explore the potential employment opportunities associated with each institution.
It’s advisable to consider university halls, especially if you live a considerable distance from the campus, as not all universities provide this accommodation option.
General Requirements
1. Pass in either General Paper (GP) or Knowledge and Inquiry (KI).
2. Unless exempted from MOE’s MTL Requirement, you must meet one of the following MTL requirements:
- “S” grade or better in H1 MTL OR H1 General Studies in Chinese (GSC) OR H2 Mother Tongue Language and Literature (MTLL)
- D7 grade or better in Higher MTL at O-Levels
- Pass in MTL Syllabus B at A-Levels
- A minimum pass grade for HL/SL MTL A: Literature
- A minimum pass grade for HL/SL MTL A: Language and Literature
- A minimum pass grade for HL/SL Language B
Indicative Grade Profile (IGP)
What makes IGP different is that it is not the cut off point for your course, but the representation of the score of the 10th and 90th percentiles of applicants offered places. To calculate IGP, note that Project Work (PW) and General Paper (GP) is assumed to be a grade “C”. However, there are certain courses that may require grades higher than “C” for GP.
If you still find yourself uncertain, visit https://www.sgunistats.com/calculator to effortlessly calculate your rank points alongside the IGP specific to your desired course.
Note that for NUS, there is an additional 2.5 rank points for first choice, for non medicine or law courses.
Application
The application deadline is set for 19 March, 2024, so it’s crucial not to procrastinate and leave it to the last minute.
When preparing to apply to your chosen universities, ensure your credit card is readily available, as application fees typically range from $10 to $15. There are many important applications to submit such as criminal record declarations and your family’s financial situation.
Aptitude-based admissions
Aptitude-based admissions (ABA) offers an opportunity for individuals with rank points lower than the 10th percentile or slightly higher. In this process, portfolios are taken into consideration, and shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview.
While ABA is optional, it serves as a valuable chance to pursue your desired course, even if you don’t meet the 10th percentile requirement, allowing you to showcase your skills and passion beyond traditional grading metrics.
Acceptance or Rejection
To determine your university admission status, regularly check the university portal. If you’re considering an appeal, note that there will be a specified date for the completion of result releases, and the appeal process can only be initiated after this period.
