5 Places To Go For Delicious & Sedap Malay Food

Rich in flavour, aromatic thanks to the use of spices and herbs, and frequently spicy. When it comes to Malay cuisine, flavour reigns supreme. When you’re wanting rendang, lemak chili padi, sambal goreng, mee rebus, mee siam, and more, we’ve got you covered.

  • Hjh Maimunah

Even before midday, the line at this nasi padang eatery extends out the door. Only the early birds get the worm, so we can’t blame the crowd. Their fantastic beef rendang ($8.00) and sambal goreng ($17.00) is limited in quantity and popular items like the tauhu telor sell out quickly. Aside from traditional Malay cuisine, there are also others that are more uncommon, such as lemak siput sedut, or sea snails swimming in a coconut-rich soup that you must try.

Address: 20 Joo Chiat Rd, Singapore 427357

Opening Hours: Tues to Sun (8am – 8pm)

  • Yunos & Family

The menu at this modest yet popular stand at Ang Mo Kio Food Centre may be small, but the food speaks for itself. The line for their staples, mee rebus ($3), mee soto ($3), gado-gado ($3.50), and satay ($0.60/stick), never really goes away at any time of day. There’s also a long list of meats on the menu, and here’s where the magic happens: any of them can be added to your mee rebus order. The must try item that we would recommend is their Mee Rebus with beef ribs ($6) and a begedil, while delicious on its own, takes the dish to new heights.

Address: 724 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6, Singapore 560724

Opening Hours: Tues to Sat (11am – 9pm)

  • Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang

The lines form early here especially during lunch and it’s difficult to get a table upstairs, but it’s all worth it. The spices used in their various dishes are bold and flavourful. If you are in the vicinity, their soft barbecued chicken in a bright coconut curry sauce is very impressive, while the towering stack of tahu goreng is sweet, crispy, and chock full of peanuts. For those who prefer vegetables, the braised brinjal in ruby-red sambal deserves its own plate of rice.

Address: 1 Geylang Serai, #02-137, Singapore 402001

Opening Hours: 8am – 4pm daily

  • Warong Nasi Pariaman

Warong Nasi Pariaman is a restaurant that lives true to its name. Mr. Isrin founded the company, which has since been passed down to his children, who have maintained the original formulas and flavours. The Ayam Bakar ($5.50), in particular, is something you should try. The chicken meat is draped and infused with a delicious coconut gravy, creating a bite that is quite full. Those wanting for a little extra heat should definitely ask for more of their handmade chilli paste.

Address: 738 North Bridge Rd, Singapore 198706

Opening Hours: 7.30am – 3pm daily

  • Yassin Kampung

Yassin Kampung, a popular family eatery, had humble beginnings before expanding to a few locations in Singapore. Since then, the menu has grown to include a variety of local favourites such as hotplate dishes and even Mala, as well as some unique delicacies such as kampung durian chicken. Stick to the beloved basics like sweet and sour fish ($13), chilli crab ($38), crispy oat prawn ($18), hotplate beancurd ($13), and other family favourites when dining out with the family.

Address: 215 Bedok North Street 1, Singapore 460215 / Multiple Locations

Opening Hours: 10am – 11pm daily

Here are some of my personal favourite Malay food restaurants that I love visiting when im in the vicinity. Bring your friends and your family and enjoy some classic malay food that will not disappoint.
