Nearly two years after closing its Tanjong Katong shop, Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tarts is making a comeback in Singapore.

The familiar name, once found at 198 Tanjong Katong Road, will reopen on 21 June 2026 at Aperia Mall #01-54. This time, it returns not just as a bakery, but as a modern Macau cha chaan teng-inspired cafe with sit-down dining, Portuguese egg tarts and Macanese-style comfort food.

The revival is led by 18-year-old baking enthusiast Vernice Olivia Ong, who is working closely with Madeleine’s original founder to preserve the brand’s egg tart recipe and baking process.

A Familiar Egg Tart Name Returns To Singapore

For many longtime fans, Madeleine’s was best known for its freshly baked Portuguese egg tarts, with flaky pastry, caramelised tops and creamy custard filling.

The brand first started in 1998 and later became a familiar stop for pastry lovers in Tanjong Katong. When it closed in August 2024, many fans thought they had seen the last of its egg tarts.

Vernice, who grew up enjoying the egg tarts herself, reached out to the original founders after the closure. Under their guidance, she learnt the original recipe and egg tart-making process, with the aim of keeping the brand’s heritage intact while introducing it to a new generation of diners.

According to the team, the egg tarts will continue to be made fresh daily, with both the crust and custard prepared in-house.

OG Portuguese Egg Tarts From $2.50

The signature item remains Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tart, priced at $2.50 each or $15 for a box of 6 pieces.

The tart features a 128-layer crust, handmade from scratch and baked till crisp. Fans who missed the original version can look forward to the familiar flaky pastry and creamy egg filling.

There will also be a local-inspired twist on the classic. The new Gula Melaka Portuguese Egg Tart is priced at $2.80 each or $16 for a box of 6 pieces. It combines the classic Portuguese egg tart with the rich, caramelised flavour of gula melaka.

For dine-in customers, the cafe will also serve Po Tat a la Mode at $4.50, featuring the egg tart with hay-smoked ice cream and milk crumbs.

New Macau Cha Chaan Teng-Inspired Dishes

Beyond egg tarts, the revived Madeleine’s will offer a wider menu inspired by Macau-style comfort food.

Diners can try the Bolo Bun at $3.50, served with flavoured butter and vanilla cream. There is also a hearty Pork Chop Bun at $5.90, paired with mustard seed sauerkraut and sweet shoyu glaze.

For something more filling, the menu includes Crab Congee at $8.90, topped with an onsen egg, and Minchee Rice at $10.90. The latter is a take on the classic Macanese dish, made with beef and pork Asian ragu, a 63-degree Celsius onsen egg and potato confit. A vegetarian version will also be available.

Another dish to look out for is the Beef Stew Capellini at $9.90, which gives Macau-style beef stew a contemporary spin by pairing it with capellini instead of rice or thick noodles.

Limited-Time Pan Roasted Quail & Desserts

For a seasonal special, the cafe will serve Pan Roasted Quail, priced at $15 or $8 for a half portion.

The dish is inspired by Macau’s famous pigeon speciality, but uses quail for its milder and more delicate meat. It is flavoured with garlic sriracha, ground roasted rice powder and charred lemon.

Dessert options include Coated Tropical Fruits and Coconut Tapioca Pudding, both priced at $4.90.

No GST At The New Madeleine’s Cafe

The new Madeleine’s at Aperia Mall will operate as a sit-down cafe with no GST.

This may appeal to diners looking for a casual spot for egg tarts, buns, congee, rice dishes and desserts without heading too far from the city fringe.

Pro Tip

Madeleine’s is reopening on 21 June 2026, so fans of the original Tanjong Katong outlet may want to visit early if they are hoping to try the OG Portuguese egg tarts. For those dining in, consider pairing the classic egg tart with Po Tat a la Mode to try the new cafe-style version alongside the original.
