Just a 3-min walk away from Tanjong Pagar MRT, Great Nanyang is an eatery with an olden days Kopitiam concept. From the same founder of Yang Ming Seafood by Keith Kang, this is a project that has been in the making for three years.
Browse through the menu containing old school coffee shop favourites that is reminiscent of those nostalgic flavours when you visit! Here’s what to look forward to:
The Signature Hainanese Chicken Cutlet ($15.90) here comes with crispy and juicy chicken doused by a home-made gravy concocted using white onions, butter, pandan leaves and more.
Having tasted over 20 renditions of Hainanese Chicken Chops island wide before coming up with their own rendition, this is a dish that will win your hearts.
A staple breakfast item for many, the Nasi Lemak Kukus ($8.90) is served with steamed coconut rice, sambal and a choice of four add-ons – Chicken Berempah Leg, Curry Chicken, Sambal Petai Prawn or Rendang Mutton, on top of the cucumber slices and fried egg.
Or if you enjoy noodles more, try the light but filling Dry Mee Siam ($8.90). Have it with the Chicken Berempah Leg, deboned for easy of consumption or choose from three other choices of Curry Chicken, Sambal Petai Prawn and Rendang Mutton.

For breakfast or a sweet treat in between meals, Great Nanyang offers a selection of Hand Made Kaya Toast in a choice of traditional ($2.50), thick ($2.70) or wholemeal ($3.00) spread with a house-made kaya with no preservatives and a seriously generous chunk of cold butter.
For the ultimate experience, they are best paired with their Soft-Boiled Kampong Eggs ($2.50 for 2pcs) that are supplied fresh from a farm in Malaysia, promising lower cholesterol and higher nutritional values.
If you are feel like indulging, try their sweet toasts like Butter Sugar and Peanut Butter or opt for the French Toast that is readily cut into cubes for ease of eating.
Available in flavours of Peanut Butter ($4.50), Kaya Butter ($4.50) and Cheesy Ham ($5.00), make it a set with Soft Boil Kampong Eggs and coffee or tea for an additional $3.00!
Additionally, there are modern takes on savoury toasts with toppings like Tuna Mayo, Chicken Floss, Egg Mayo, Egg Cheese, Cheesy Ham Egg and Garlic and Luncheon Meat to choose from.
Fun fact, for the egg toasts particularly, the egg whites and yolks are actually cooked separately to introduce more variations in texture!
At Great Nanyang, all drinks come in sizable portions! You can enjoy Kopi and Teh (Hot: $1.90, Cold: $3.80) choices that are crafted following traditional recipes, finished with smooth frothy foam on the top to ensure a delightful experience, whether you prefer them hot or cold. Definitely worth the money in our opinion.
A blend of Nanyang Coffee and sweet condensed coconut milk, the coconut coffee ($5.90) has light but aromatic fragrant flavours of creamy coconut. P.s. coconut coffee actually has health perks such as boosting metabolism, increasing energy levels and providing good cholesterol…plus, it tastes great!
Overall, the food is moderately priced for its portions, similar to pricing in a typical Tze Char store, and the atmosphere is cosy.
The Nanyang Heritage Café is a great place for anyone, young or old, to soak in the past of the great 1950s-1980s and enjoy authentic flavours of both Malaysia and Singapore.
The spruced up dishes are sure to guarantee a comforting and filling time. The only problem? There is only one outlet, for now… so head on down before the place gets packed!
