Unraveling the psychological journey of a teenage girl through the trials and tribulations of growing up in the modern world, The Monster in the Mirror production aims to represent the inner struggles of most youths as they struggle to find a space and identity for themselves.
After receiving rave reviews and captivating over 11,500 viewers in its 2021 digital production, Gateway Arts brings to the stage a pop musical that shows us how to treat ourselves better. Delivering an important message on self-care and self-acceptance, the musical shines a light on mental health and self-love issues amidst the challenges of growing up in today’s world and is a coming-of-age story for the new age.
The story of The Monster in the Mirror centers around Jane (played by Sharon Sum), a typical high school student who faces the daunting pressures of social hierarchies and online drama. Jane is no stranger to harassment and negative self-talk, as she is constantly bullied at school and subjected to criticism at home. However, her world changes when she receives a magical mirror from a flamboyant Fairy God Delivery Beng (played by Noah Yap).
This mirror brings to life the monster that has been living in her head; the voice that has been turning her world upside down with self-doubt. Things quickly unravel as the monster begins to overpower Jane and turn her world upside down. Will the monster take over? Or will she learn to forgive and love herself?
Developed under the Gateway Arts Collective-In-Residence Programme 2020-2021 and created by Bitesize Theatre Productions, the show aims to provide a relatable representation of the challenges and obstacles that adolescents encounter while growing up in today’s society.
In collaboration with TOUCH Mental Wellness (a service of TOUCH Community Services), the musical provides a timely tale that empowers youth and encourages them to seek support. Shedding light on the expectations placed on today’s youth, The Monster in the Mirror aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and provide a safe space for young people to express their struggles and seek help.
Opening at the Gateway Theatre from 12 to 27 May 2023 (Showtimes: 2.30pm Sat | 7.30pm Fri & Sat), the theatrical production promises a visual spectacle with toe-tapping original tunes, dazzling dance numbers and theatrically magical moments that will leave audiences entertained and moved.
