White Restaurant, also fondly known as ‘The Original Sembawang White Beehoon’ Restaurant, is ready for the Year of the Rabbit with auspicious set menu offerings at its seven restaurants island wide (excluding White Express at Tampines Mall).
With three different auspicious CNY Set Menus – Joyous, Prosperity and Fortune Sets – each customized for groups of 4, 6, 8 and 10, there’s something for everyone no matter how big the size of your family and friends. Available from 6 January to 5 February 2023 with a 3-day in advance pre-order, every set menu comes with a set of complimentary limited edition red packet and Mandarin orange bag, while stocks last.
We begin the feast by tossing up to a year of great fortune with White Restaurant’s Grand Fortune Abalone Yusheng ($66.80). Luscious 18-head abalones are served with shredded winter melon, shredded dried persimmon, shredded carrot, shredded jelly fish and buckwheat.
The specially concocted piquant yuzu sauce ties the dish together with a fruity fragrance and taste. As an ode to the Year of the Rabbit, every Yusheng served will come decorated with an auspicious rabbit ornament to bring home.
The second course that was served to us was Braised Crab Meat and Dried Scallop Thick Soup. Every mouthful of this soup will fill your mouth with sweetness from the crab meat and the intense flavours of dried scallops. The vinegar and pepper helped elevate the taste of this dish, and also add an earthy balance to the seafood flavours.
Personally, I felt that the third course – Steamed Marble Goby was one of the highlights of the entire set menu. The dish was well garnished along with the freshness and tenderness of the fish. It was easy to hand out different portions and the serving was adequate for 8 pax.
The following course that was served was the Braised Pork with Shajing Oyster and Mushrooms. The symbolism of prosperity continues with the included Prosperity Bags where savoury fish meat and fish roe are wrapped within beancurd skin and shaped to resemble the purse used to store gold and silver during ancient Chinese times.
One of the Chinese New Year staples Prawn and Broccoli in XO sauce is served with sweet juicy large prawns and broccoli cooked in a savoury housemade XO sauce. The broccoli had a good crunch to it and was well seasoned.
The last main dish that we had was their popualr and well known favourite: Abalone and Scallop White Beehoon. The full bodied broth that makes the original white Beehoon unique is simmered for more than 8 hours daily to extract the essence of chicken. Paired with abalone and scallop as main ingredients, ready yourself to immerse in a sea of sweet and savoury rich broth as you dig into this homely dish.
We ended the meal with a traditional desert of Yam Paste with Lotus Seed and Coconut Milk. The dessert was sweet, luscious and a comforting dessert, which became a one of a kind treat that complemented our entire meal.
