You do not have to treat us any different during the month of Ramadan. It is the same as any other days.

There have been many instances where my non-Muslim friends will avoid eating in front of me during Ramadan. It is really sweet of them, though it is really okay for them to eat or drink in front of me.

The Holy month of Ramadan is the nineth month in the Islamic calendar. For the entire month, Muslims worldwide would practice the act of fasting – refrain from drinking or eating from dawn till dusk.

It Is Okay To Eat In Front Of Us

As a Muslim myself, I practice these acts. However, many of my non-Muslim friends are often avoiding themselves from eating and drinking in front of me.

I am also questioned several times about the dos and don’ts during Ramadan. Not even a sweet can be consumed when fasting.

Many of my non-Muslim friends will go out of my way to eat or drink. Even my colleagues will suggest ways to not eat when I am around. Let me emphasise that it is totally okay to eat and drink in front of us during this month.

In fact, you are helping us figure out what to eat for iftar, from noodles to fried rice to thirst-quenching drinks.

There Are Several Reasons Why One Is Not Fasting

Though it is customary to fast during Ramadan, there are several reasons that could possibly result in one not fasting. Women during menstruation are not allowed to fast. If one is not feeling well, they are advised not to fast as well.

If you see a Muslim eating or drinking, they have their own reasons. This in any way does not mean that they are bad Muslims. All our actions have reasons behind them.

Thus, if you see a Muslim acting a certain way during Ramadan, just let them be as there is always a reason behind it.

Ramadan Is The Month We Look Forward To

In the eyes of non-Muslims, we may look like we are tired and do not have energy to survive the day.

Do not worry as we had our pre-dawn meal before the start our day. Ramadan is the most loved month in the Islamic calendar. I love Ramadan with all my heart.

Not only we practice acts or fasting and worship, but it also brings families together. Everyday during iftar, my family would sit and eat together. We would catch up on each other, and bond over delicious food.

Afterwards, we will all solat Jemaah (prayer) and perform tarawih prayers together. Sometimes I wish Ramadan would stay forever. It is such a blissful month for us Muslims.

BAZAARS: Bazaars are one of the highlights of Ramadan in Singapore.

Apart from that, we enjoy the bazaars and the bond we create with each other during this month. The vibe hits different. Unfortunately, since the pandemic hit, bazaars were placed on pause but that did not bring down the Ramadan spirit. Check out this article to find out more!

Thus, you do not have to treat us any different on this beautiful month. We are celebrating Ramadan with all our hearts.
