Everyone in Southeast Asia is probably familiar and enjoys prata. Whether you call it paratha or roti canai, frozen prata is a staple in most homes. These frozen prata doughs are a wonderfully flexible component and here are four clever but simple dishes you can make.
Cinnamon Twist
Image Credits: Savory spiceThese sweet and crunchy cinnamon sugar twists, which resemble churros, are delicious when eaten warm with a dollop of ice cream or dipped in molten chocolate. This is a no-fuss dessert that will wow adults and children alike while also being incredibly simple to make.
Ingredients:
- 2 pieces of frozen prata
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon mixed with 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 tablespoons melted butter
Method:
- Thaw frozen prata for 1-2 minutes until slightly malleable.
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- Using a brush, coat the tops of the prata with melted butter and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture until completely covered.
- Cut the prata into roughly 1.5CM thick strips.
- Taking a strip of prata, hold at the two ends and twist in opposite directions several times.
- Place the completed twists onto a parchment-lined baking tray and brush on some more melted butter and sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes until the twists are golden brown.
Sausage Puffs

It’s more forgiving than making your own, and it’s also less expensive and time-consuming than frozen puff pastry. Bake these small sausage puffs in the oven or you can use an air fryer.
Ingredients:
- 2 pieces of frozen prata
- 8 cheesy cocktail sausages
- 1 beaten egg
Method:
- Thaw frozen prata for 1-2 minutes until slightly malleable.
- Preheat oven or pre-set airfryer to 180°C.
- Cut the prata into 4 quarters.
- Place 1 cocktail sausage on the thinner end of one of the quarters and roll. Once you reach the edge, egg wash the seams and seal. Repeat for the remaining puffs.
- Place the sausage puffs seam-side down onto a parchment-lined baking tray or directly into the airfryer.
- Use a brush to egg wash the puffs and bake/air fry for 10-15 minutes until the prata is puffy and golden brown.
Pizza Prata
Craving for pizza but buying a whole regular pizza for yourself might seem too sinful? Make your own pizza at home with this simple yet delicious method. You can choose to add or swop out any toppings according to your preference or use whatever is available at home!
Ingredients:
- 2 pieces of frozen prata
- Shredded mozarella cheese / cheese slices
- Button mushrooms (sliced)
- Cherry tomatoes (sliced)
- Hotdogs (sliced)
Method:
- Preheat oven or pre-set airfryer to 200°C.
- Stack two pieces of frozen prata together to form the base.
- Add some cheese on the base of the prata before adding sliced mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and hotdogs.
- Top with more cheese and bake for 10-12minutes till golden brown on the edges.
Otah Puffs
Image Credits: Her worldOtah is one of the most popular snacks in Singapore. You can take it to the next level at home with this simple otah puff. It is similar to regular curry puffs, except it is larger and has a crispier, flakier crust. The best thing is that it isn’t fried!
Ingredients:
- 6 pieces of frozen prata
- 1 box frozen otak (Recommended: Famous Muar Fish Otak)
- 1 egg, beaten
Method:
- Cut 1 roti prata into quarters.
- Lightly mash the otah, and spread it over 1 prata quarter.
- Top with another quarter.
- Hold a fork perpendicular to the edge of the prata and press along the entire length to seal it.
- Brush the beaten egg lightly over the prata puff.
- Repeat steps 1-4 for the rest of the roti prata.
- In an oven preheated to 190°C, bake the prata puffs for 20min.
