The popular rice sando craze swept Tokyo and Osaka by storm, capturing the attention of people from all walks of life, as seen by long queues it’s finally available here in Singapore. While many people miss Japan because leisure travel between the two nations is still prohibited, locals and Japanese expats alike can still get a glimpse of the country!
#ricesando is a unique and fun method to eat onigiri! The hearty teppan-yaki contents are encased in premium Japanese rice known as Hokkaido Yumepirika Rice along with seaweed for a fuss-free sandwich.
Blessed by the rice gods, I’ve been graced with the opportunity to try out #ricesando in Singapore, located in the heart of the city at Plaza Singapura #B2-45 so here are some of the items on the menu:
The Sunny Hamburg ($6.80) invokes a forgotten, yet pleasant memory topped with their special in-house Hamburg sauce. The authentic Japanese rice burger is made with a hand-formed ground beef patty with an 8:2 meat-to-fat ratio, sautéed onions, and a sunny side up egg. My mouth was watering after observing how the chef prepared the sandwich. The harmony of flavours after taking a bite left me longing for more.
For those who loves to spice it up, the Miso Pork Yakiniku ($5.80) is drenched in an exclusive handmade Hokkaido miso sauce created from a blend of red and white miso and fragrant black garlic mayu. A fragrant blend of black peppercorns, chili powder, and sesame oil makes up the mayu to give it that spicy kick.
Gyu Sukiyaki ($6.20), consists of tender beef slices simmered in soy sauce. The yakiniku sandwich includes #ricesando’s signature sauces, a unique blend of fuji apple, ginger puree, soya sauce, mirin, and minced onion. Before being reduced slowly, it’s flame-seared and stir-fried until fragrant. Simultaneously, experience the taste of savoury, sweet, and umami!
Delicious seafood brings you the Unagi ($7.80) that is tucked between the rice buns. Full of meaty goodness, enjoy a heap of teriyaki sauce-glazed unagi with a dab of mayonnaise.
The “Una-Gyu” Unagi and Beef ($8.20) lets you enjoy the best of both worlds. Meaty unagi is coupled with delicate slices of beef in this exquisite surf and turf dish paired with #ricesando’s signature sauce.
For a meat free option, the Inari Mushroom ($6.40) sees sauteed honshimeiji and shitake mushrooms coated with an original red and white Hokkaido miso sauce before being wrapped in a soft, sweet inari skin, making it perfect for both vegans and vegetarians.
Don’t forget to treat yourself and upgrade to a value set for $4.80 more, which includes a side and a drink. Featured sides includes Tonjiru Miso Soup with Pork ($3.80) and the Original Karaage ($3.80). For those keen on something a bit more special, the Curry Karaage ($3.80) is bathed in a sweet and mildly spicy curry sauce for those who are adventurous.
Fresh out of the fryer, each bite fills with your mouth with the delicious juices of the chicken. Succulent and luscious is exactly what I would call it, plus washing it down with their Tonjiro Miso soup makes it a balanced meal.
Prepared with homestyle cooking, Ricesando helps me envision what it could be like to dine in Japan. If you are ever in town and looking to enjoy bite-size rice sandwiches on the go, be sure to drop by Plaza Singapura, #B2-45. They are opens daily from 11am – 9pm daily!
