Before watching How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, I had heard how good and sad it was from numerous reviews. Skeptical that a mere movie could be that touching, I decided to see it for myself. Needless to say, I ended up crying through the entire film.
The movie is a Thai film that recently aired in Singapore. It follows a university dropout known as M. In his quest for money, he decides to take care of his grandmother, who has cancer, hoping to inherit her wealth after she passes away.
This might seem like a typical cliché plot, but there are many reasons why this film stands out and is worth watching.
Firstly, the movie’s start and end take place in a cemetery, creating a poignant echo between the beginning and the conclusion. At the start, the family is there to pay respects to the grandmother’s parents, and M is tasked with scattering flowers around the graves.
However, he does not do it properly, prompting his grandmother to chide him. At the end of the movie, before she passes away, the grandmother tells M that she will haunt him if he scatters flowers around her grave carelessly.
Despite this warning, M still scatters the flowers carelessly, leaving the audience to ponder the deeper reasons behind his actions.
Secondly, the movie has a calm, everyday tone, interspersed with humorous scenes that mirror daily life. The grandmother often insults M or calls him nicknames because he always does things unseriously, but these moments actually highlight the bond between them.
These small, relatable interactions reflect the relationship many of us have with our own grandmothers, making the story more poignant.
Thirdly, the movie features many sad scenes. For instance, the grandmother reserves the first pomegranate fruit for M, even though her youngest son wanted it. She writes well wishes for all her children, but her eldest son only cares about his own family.
Amah is often shown waiting outside her house for her children and grandchildren. Additionally, her children are more concerned about the inheritance than her well-being. These moments evoke deep sadness for Amah and add emotional depth to the film.
Last but not least, the movie’s title holds significant meaning within the story. I burst into tears when I realised why it’s called that. When M was young, he asked Amah to save money so he could buy her a house in the future.
After Amah passed away, M inherited millions from her savings and remembered his promise. He used the money to buy her an individual grave, fulfilling her final wish.
There are many other reasons why the movie is both excellent and deeply moving, but those are for you to discover. So, go watch it and be sure to bring tissues with you.
