If you’re having difficulty choosing your subject combination in junior college as an arts student, let me share my experience studying HECm. This might help if you’re considering this combination as well. Here’s my experience with the subjects and ways in which you can work on preparing for it.
-
H2 History
I would say H2 History is a really difficult subject. It requires a lot of memorisation and extensive content study. You can’t just blindly memorise; you need to know how to use your content to answer questions effectively.
However, it’s a very useful subject as it develops critical thinking and logic. It has also helped me learn more about the world and current affairs, which is beneficial beyond school.
The only way to study H2 History effectively is to consult your teachers as early as possible when needed. Be sure to create timelines to understand your content better. Additionally, do as many essay banks as you can to improve your ability to analyse questions.
-
H2 Economics
H2 Economics can be quite challenging initially, especially since most of us did not study it in secondary school. Similar to History, you need to understand your content and know how to utilise it effectively. Once you do enough practice, you will surely understand the material and do well.
-
H2 Chinese Language and Literature
H2 Chinese Language and Literature requires a certain level of proficiency in Chinese. The language component is generally straightforward, but the literature part can be challenging due to the various components like poems and ancient texts, which can be hard to understand.
However, it becomes easier once you get the hang of it. You can study by reviewing analyses and familiarising yourself with the style of Chinese literature.

H1 Maths
As an arts student, many of us probably dislike maths. However, H1 Maths is still quite manageable as it is quite similar to secondary school maths. You can practice using the Ten Year Series and consult your teachers when needed.
