For the uninitiated, Meow Barbecue, founded in 2012 by Uncle Meow (猫叔), is famous for attracting long snaking queues in China, even winning awards for its queues. With over 30 outlets across 10 major Chinese cities, the restaurant is set to open its first overseas outpost right here in Singapore at Bugis+ on 24 September 2022.
Bringing with them their signature variety of BBQ items crafted in adorable cat elements, the cuteness of cat paws and motifs can also be found all around the restaurant. The usual disposable aprons, mask holders and cloths for cleaning your glasses are adorned with adorable cats that are available upon request.
From the front entrance to the crockery used and various decorative ornaments in and around the space, Meow Barbecue showcases Uncle Meow’s life-long love for cats while serving up delicious food for even the most discerning tastebuds.
Look forward to the Diamond Cut Marinated Beef Ribs ($28.80) where the beef is cut into irregular diamond shapes for extra surface-to-meat ratio before being marinated with an in-house secret sauce that renders it delightfully savoury and flavourful.
The Meow Signature Spicy Beef ($23.80) is marinated with pickled chillies and its delicate marbling gives the beef an added milky fragrance in the aftertaste with a spicy kick. While delicious on its own, pair it with some rice for a satisfying combination.
Dig into signature items like Beef Chuck Cubes with Onion (60g – $10.80, 120g – $20.80, 180g $29.80) where beef cubes are served on petals of onion for added sweetness or the Savory Beef Flank Steak ($21.80) that comes doused in a special sauce.
The Meow Signature Chicken with Cheese Dip ($15.80) on the other hand lets you dunk and twirl your cooked chicken into melted cheese for that satisfying gooey cheese pull. The cuts of meat are well marinated and delicious on its own or pairs well with their various condiments.
Other items to look forward to include the Rose Beef Tongue ($25.80) that serves up tender beef tongue sliced and arranged in a delicate shape of a rose flower. There’s also the Iberico Pork Collar Marinated in Pineapple Sauce ($22.80) that borrows the acidity of pineapple to cut through the fattiness of the marbled pork collar while lending it fruity notes for an appetizing tanginess.
For desserts that will not disappoint, the Meow Signature Caramel Pudding ($6.80) is an iteration of the crème brulee finished off with the iconic white cat paw pudding. Also popular is the snow ice series which comes in two versions and the highlight of our meal.
The Black Cat Snow Ice ($10.80) will delight Oreo fans while the White Cat Snow Ice ($10.80) is soy flavoured and topped with strawberry sauce. Dig into the centre for an assortment of grass jelly and nata de coco cubes treats that may sound like an odd combination but tastes great when paired together.
Wash it all down with the Meow Lemon Tea ($3.80) or Meow Grass Tea ($3.80) that is made with kiwi and nata de coco for a tangy yet refreshing cooler to beat the Singapore heat.
