Heartwarming Acts Of Kindness By Singaporeans

There are often comments suggesting that Singaporean society is perceived as cold, with people only caring about themselves. However, I have personally witnessed numerous acts of kindness by Singaporeans. Here are some acts of kindness that you may have witnessed before too:

  1. Giving up seats

This is a simple gesture, yet there are many who comment that “youngsters don’t know how to give up seats” or “youngsters pretend not to see people who need seats.” However, I have seen many young people offering their seats to those in need, even when they themselves look tired and could use the seat. Even if they don’t notice, a polite request will usually prompt them to give up their seat willingly.

  1. Giving food or drinks to migrant workers

With all the hard work that migrant workers have put into building Singapore, the country has shown kindness in return. A viral video captured an elderly lady giving food to migrant workers. I have also witnessed Singaporeans giving drinks to migrant workers, simply to express their gratitude for their hard work.

  1. Translating for tourists

I once saw English-speaking tourists board a bus and try to ask the bus captain whether it went to a particular stop. The bus captain didn’t understand English and was struggling to help them. Another Singaporean noticed this and stepped in to assist, translating for the tourists and solving the problem for the bus captain.

  1. Shoelaces reminders

This is a gesture I often encounter, as my shoelaces frequently come undone. I usually don’t pay much attention and leave them untied. However, strangers often remind me about my shoelaces whenever this happens. I find this to be a very heartwarming and considerate gesture.

  1. Strangers offering directions

As someone with no sense of direction, I often find myself getting lost, wandering the streets and relying heavily on Google Maps. Perhaps because it’s so obvious that I’m lost, random strangers often approach me, asking if I need help. Some even take the time to escort me to my destination when they can. They truly are lifesavers!

What acts of kindness have you seen and would this prompt you to leave a small mark that could potentially make someone else’s day?
