There is no right way to celebrate your Lunar New Year but there is a wrong way and that is celebrating without snacking on some festive goodies! It’s that time of year where you gain some weight from eating all the delicious food that can be found in almost all Chinese households during the festive season. Here are some must haves for Chinese New Year!
Bak Kwa
Bak Kwa looks like a western jerky and entails preservation and the infusion of ingredients such as salt, sugar, sauces and spices thrown into the mix. Bak kwa traditionally takes the form of thin square slices and is usually made from pork. A sweet and savoury delight, one piece is never enough but make sure you save room for other delicious goodness!
Pineapple Tarts
Who can forget the pineapple tart for Chinese New Year? The most classic staple every year with lots of slightly different variations by different manufacturers, this is a snack you cant miss. Traditionally, these exquisite tarts are buttery and flaky, with the ideal blend of sweet and sour. Whether its homemade with love or bought from a reputable seller, I like to eat the pineapple jam before consuming the tart on its own. How do you consume yours?
Prawn Crackers / Stick
Prawn Stick Crackers are an addictive snack that is fragrant and delectable. The original flavour is great, but most sellers have a spicy version as well that is just as shiok. Usually available in large tubs or sealed in a large plastic packaging, this snack is a hot favourite amongst the younger crowd and will be the first to get depleted when my relatives come over.
Love Letter
Who knew these seemingly innocuous love letters could pack such a calorie punch? For such a light and airy snack, each piece generally contains 56 calories! A tiny layer of batter is poured into an iron mold and baked over charcoal to create Love Letters. After that, it’s rapidly removed from the fire and rolled into a cylindrical shape. These cookies are light, crumbly, and just the right amount of sweet, exactly like love and the added weight you will get after CNY.
Kueh Bangkit
Kueh Bangkit is one fastidious cookie to crumble. Depending on the texture and recipe, different types of flours like arrowroot, tapioca or sago can be used alongside ingredients such as coconut milk and pandan for great flavouring and taste. Although they have a hard exterior, these cookies will melt in your mouth with little to no effort and make you feel like popping an extra one or two would not hurt your waistlines.
Here are some CNY snacks that is commonly enjoyed during the Lunar New Year! Are your favourites in this list? If you are looking for a place to start shopping for CNY snacks, check out for delicious goodies that start from $9 per bottle!
