We’re back with another series of well-known animals. In our favourite films, animals play roles. Animal performers are adorable, popular, and capable of eliciting a wide range of emotions without the use of words.
- Maru the Shiba Inu
Maru, a Shiba Inu from Japan, epitomizes what the Best Dog in the World should be: inspirational, gorgeous, photogenic, sociable, and, most importantly, fluffy. He’s incredibly fluffy. Maru’s demeanor is actually what makes him “the world’s dog,” as he is neither hyperactive nor aloof. He’s calm enough to cuddle with at night, playful enough to play fetch, and not afraid of a lively dance or a completely unplanned freakout. As you read this, can’t you picture him at your feet? You don’t want to pet him? You don’t want to squeeze him, do you? Isn’t it cool that his name means “round” in Japanese?
- Ham the Astrochimp
Ham the Astrochimp was the first great ape to be launched into space, and he was a chimp. On January 31, 1961, Ham conducted a suborbital flight as part of the Mercury-Redstone 2 mission, which was part of Project Mercury, the United States’ space program. Ham reached a height of 250 kilometre above the earth at a speed of around 5800 mph. He was weightless for approximately 6 minutes. Despite the extreme speed, g-forces, and weightlessness, Ham amazingly survived the voyage by performing his job correctly. On January 18, 1983, at the age of 26, he died 22 years after his momentous voyage into space.
- Stubbs the Mayor
In a write-in campaign in 1998, the yellow cat mayor was elected in Talkeetna, a town of around 900 people. Stubbs, who enjoyed drinking water and catnip from a margarita glass, became a tourist attraction soon after. In the town, there is no human mayor. Stubbs had survived a dog attack in 2013 but eventually died at the age of 20. Even though Stubbs is no longer mayor, one of his owners’ kittens might be up for the job.
- Rin Tin Tin the Movie Star
Rin Tin Tin was a German Shepherd returned home from France by a WWI vet. He starred in a number of silent films and is often credited with popularizing the German Shepherd breed at the time. Rin Tin Tin quickly became a cultural icon in the United States. In the 1930s, everyone lamented his passing, but his descendants carried on his legacy in Hollywood. The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, starring one of his ancestors, was later made into a film.
- Cher Ami the WWI Hero
Homing pigeons were an important aspect of combat communication during World War I. Cher Ami’s most famous mission was to save a battalion of American soldiers in France in 1918, when she flew 40 kilometer in 25 minutes. The troops were under fire from both the Germans and their allies, who had no idea who they were shooting at. Despite being shot, Cher Ami kept on and arrived at her destination. She had been blinded and had lost a leg, but she had fought back. Cher Ami received the French Croix de Guerre, or War Cross, for her bravery.
Apart from the usual memes we see nowadays, these animals are world famous for various reasons that is worth applauding and knowing about.
