The chic, two-storey French bistro just off Keong Saik Road – named Chez Suzette, after its owner, Suzette Simon Tingaud – is the last place you’d expect to find homegrown products such as homeware, kombucha, and even Kokedama (moss balls) which are carefully crafted by local artisans. But that’s exactly what you’ll get at the newly-opened French bistro: mouth-watering crepes and classic duck confit, along with a showcase of true-blue Singaporean products that would be perfect for any home.
Chez Suzette is committed to creating a home away from home and the products selected help bridge that gap. Although seemingly mundane, the clothes you put on in the morning and the dishes that you eat off add a personal touch to the little rituals of the everyday. Every brand stocked at Chez Suzette prides itself in producing high quality, artisanal items that are born and bred right here in Singapore.
We’ve been rallying around the clarion call to support locals in recent years, and Chez Suzette is no exception. One of the central goals of the French bistro was to create a community of mutual support where anyone can feel like they belong. The cafe’s soft curves, illuminated by natural light streaming in through the windows, is simply the warm, fuzzy icing on the cake.
KneatKnacks
Marie Kondo might be onto something when she talked about the joy of organising and no one does it better here in Singapore than KneatKnacks. With Pom Pom baskets and glass trinket holders, this local brand asks the question: who says minimalism has to be boring.
Not only are there items to make homes tidier, but they also add a personal touch to everyday items, decluttering your space in style. These exclusive items are not only sophisticated and affordable but are also specially handpicked by Suzette herself, inspired by her cherished memories that will sweeten any space.
Edrialhayward
Every home needs a signature scent, something people pick up on immediately after entering a space – a simple and sustainable way to do so is with candles. Made with the finest ingredients, Edrialhayward crafts luxury candles that are perfect to set the mood for any occasion – think sweeter, floral scents like their decadent Orchid + Sheer Vanilla-scented candles, to the woody musk of Sandalwood Incense + Exotic Amber.
These hand-poured candles are ethically made and non-toxic, dedicating a solid 10% of their profits to local animal welfare organisations such as CWS and PAWS. After all, a single candle can light a thousand more.
Kokeball
Plants are the easiest way to liven up a space, but space costs a premium in Singapore.
Inspired by the Japanese art of Kokedama – which translates to “moss-ball”, these plants fit the palm of a hand. These little bundles of joy are handmade with love and are an excellent addition to homes. Easy to maintain and versatile, these Kokeballs can be displayed in a small bowl as a unique centrepiece or hung around the house, framing the space with nature.
Other local brands include Mylindesignco, which makes floral themed handcrafted stationery; Monkeyloot, where sustainable and artisanal come together to create home decor; Our Barehands, where every product has a story behind it; and finally Pourabucha, a one-stop-shop for all your Kombucha needs. With a common goal in mind, these brands work hand in hand with Chez Suzette, building strong relationships and supporting one another.
Moving forward, Chez Suzette intends to host masterclasses alongside her collaborators, showcasing the individuals who are at the highest level of artistry. This will be paired with a specially curated set menu of classic French dishes. Providing a platform for these local businesses, Chez Suzette turns the spotlight onto their craftsmanship and passion, taking #supportlocal to the next level.
Despite being only a few months old, Chez Suzette is already making a stand by backing local businesses. Having struck a winning combination of quality products and delectable French cuisine all encased in a beautiful cafe, Chez Suzette is definitely worth a trip to the heart of the city.
