For those who are yet to explore the delightful world of Korean cuisine or perhaps haven’t indulged in the cultural phenomena of Korean dramas, there’s a treasure trove of delectable dishes waiting to be discovered. Apart from the usual kimchi, here are some essential Korean dishes in my opinion that is usually provided as a side dish or things you should order to add to your meal:

Japchae

Japchae, a beloved Korean dish, consists of stir-fried glass noodles combined with an array of vegetables and meat. Traditionally served as a banchan, or side dish, it also stands as a satisfying main course option.

With its chewy and slightly glutinous noodle texture, the simple flavours of sesame oil, soy sauce paired with fragrant sesame seeds is sure to stir your appetite for more.

Jjajangmyeon

Jjajangmyeon is a savoury Korean dish featuring noodles bathed in a thick, rich sauce crafted from chunjang (black soybean paste), diced pork and assorted vegetables. This should not be confused with Chinese zhajiangmian that has a more intense, savoury flavour.

While both dishes share a common origin in their use of fermented soybean paste, Korean jajangmyeon tends to be sweeter and thicker. Give it a try to find out the difference for yourself!

Samgyeopsal

Your life is not complete without having tried Korean BBQ. When you visit a Korean barbecue restaurant, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with samgyeopsal, which is grilled pork belly. Although there are marinated variations that are equally delicious, I would recommend you opt for the non-marinated to start.

Additionally, understanding how Koreans utilise lettuce leaves to wrap around the meat along with various condiments like gochujang sauce, a sesame oil and salt dip etc will enhance your dining experience and craving for more.

Bibimbap

One might draw parallels between bibimbap and our local caifan, as both feature rice accompanied by an assortment of vegetables, meat and sauce. However, Korean bibimbap offers a small twist with its requirement to stir and mix the ingredients.

Gochujang sauce is usually included in bibimbap that is slightly spicy and adds depth to the dish creating a flavourful and varied culinary experience as compared to eating our caifan components separately.

Sundubu Jjigae

This tofu stew, known for its spiciness and typically served with either seafood or meat, is a quintessential comfort food that’s both hearty and satisfying. Not only is the dish protein rich with soft tofu, it is also packed with vegetables and kimchi for a rich yet balanced meal.
