You’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for a birthstone or attempting to figure out which birthstone gem hues go with which month. We’ll go into the history of these stones, how they’re used, and what each month’s birthstone is like.
July (Ruby)
Ruby is the birthstone for July and gets its name from the Latin word rubeus, which means “red.” Known as a protective stone, rubies can bring happiness and passion into the life of the wearer.
The ruby is often associated with life and blood, as well as increasing courage. The Mogok Valley in Burma is noted for its vivid blood red coloured rubies and is one of the most famous ruby destinations. Rubies can also be found in the US, Thailand, Vietnam, and India.
August (Peridot)
If you were born in the month of August, your birthstone is peridot. This gemstone has a brilliant green light and is thought to be named after the Greek word peridona, which means “plenty.”
Known as the stone of compassion, peridot is believed to bring good health, restful sleep and peace to relationships by balancing emotions and mind. The ancient Egyptians believed that Peridot was born of the sun, and its vibrant, life-enhancing qualities are still prized today. When you hold a peridot in your hand, it will sparkle and play with the light that hits it in the most fascinating way.
September (Sapphire)
If you were born in September, the sapphire is your birthstone. Derived from the Latin word sapphirus, which means “blue stone”, Sapphire is also known as a “stone of prosperity”, attracting gifts of all kinds and fulfilling dreams and desires.
The hardness of sapphires, which is a 9 on the Mohs scale, is one of their advantages (diamond is a 10). This indicates that it is a tough and durable gemstone that will not scratch easily. It also means that this gem is suitable for industrial applications that are subjected to a lot of wear and tear.
October (Tourmaline or Opal)
If you were born in the month of October, your birthstone is a combination of tourmaline and opal. The name tourmaline derives from the Sinhalese word tura mali, which means “mixed colored stone” that is believed to foster compassion and cool headedness.
Opal, which derives its name from the Greek word opallios, is the other birthstone. This basically translates to “to witness a hue change,” and symbolizes hope, innocence and purity. The ancient Greeks believed Opals gave their owners the gift of prophecy and guarded them against disease which encourages freedom and independence.
November (Topaz or Citrine)
The birthstones topaz and citrine are both connected with the month of November. The more popular November gemstone is topaz, which comes in a variety of yellow tints. Topaz gets its name from Topazios, the Greek name for St. John’s Island in the Red Sea and helps promote self trust.
This is due to the fact that yellow stones were mined on the island, although they were most likely not topaz. Like most gems, topaz gets its vivid yellow color from impurities. Topaz is colorless in its purest form, but depending on impurities, it can take on a range of colors.
December (Tanzanite, Zircon or Turquoise)
Tanzanite, zircon, and turquoise are the birthstones for the month of December. Each of these stones is a deep blue colour and has its own chemical composition and history.
Tanzanite, a gem you may not have heard of before, is one of the more interesting of the three. This unique gem can only be found in Tanzania, and it was discovered in 1967. Trace levels of vanadium give tanzanite its deep blue colour.
