Bento cakes. The concept is simple, place a cake in a typical bento box, and make the cake as cute as possible. Cakes and pastries have always been popular as it is a sweet dessert that can be enjoyed by many, but does making a mini-cake and adding it to a bento box make it better?
We tried it ourselves to see if it is worth it!
The Ordering
A simple search of Korean Bento Cakes in Singapore brings up quite a few options, but one caught our eye which is from the bakery Bob The Baker Boy.
The design offerings on the website are indeed adorbs to the max, and considering they are mini cakes, it adds to the cuteness and “uwu” level.
We purchased the “Pastel Pink and Teal Abstract Bento Cake” (there was a promotion price of SGD$39.90 while stocks last) and chose a “Brown Sugar Boba Milk” flavour, which we honestly thought was unique for a cake filling so it must be worth a shot.
The Appearance
Upon opening the bento box, the design on the cake is elegant, delicate and just oozes “uwu”. The buttercream aroma was apparent, and we couldn’t wait to cut it open.
The cake came with a simple knife and a golden thin candle, for those last-minute birthday celebrations.
Upon cutting open the cake, it was clear that the buttercream is extremely soft, and the sponge cake was moist. Though the middle section, which was brown sugar mochi, was a little bit hard to cut through given that it is a very chewy mochi.
The Taste
The cake was easily cut into small pieces (credits to the knife and scale of the cake) and was distributed around the office.
The comments, like rojak, are mixed and varied, but there were a few that stood out…
Taste
- Taste EXACTLY like bubble tea!
- Taste like TIGER SUGAR
- Taste of childhood, which is very good if the person devouring is young at heart (*wink wink)
- Taste is better than it looks (to be fair, we “self-collected” it, so the cream melted a bit)
- Not much flavour notes other than sweet…
- The boba filling overpowers the cream
Texture
- The boba mochi in between is very chewy, a bit like real pearls!
- It’s a denser version of a brown sugar milk tea
- The overall cake is creamy
- The cake on its own without the cream is slightly dry
Worth It?
- On the expensive side…
- Will buy ONLY for Special Occasions (ie. 1 to 1 birthday celebrations)
- Ok lah, still above average cakes because of the unique taste

Overall
Pricey, but the unique flavours really standout as unique and memorable. The cuteness of the cake is good as a surprise birthday celebration, especially if someone loves cute stuff. But it’s a cake lah, so can’t really go wrong XD. And to be honest, despite the comments, we still enjoyed the cake!
