There is no doubt that audio streaming systems such as Spotify and Apple Music are altering the way we can access music at any time. However, vinyl has enjoyed a comeback in popularity over the last decade or two, generating a new generation of vinyl aficionados who appreciate the time-honoured medium of musical playback.
There’s something so soothing about the crackle of a record and the warmer tones of the melodies that bring the music to life. Putting on a record is the entire music experience: active song selection and careful listening to how artists create and communicate their message, as opposed to streaming a two-hour playlist of lo-fi sounds in the background on your phone.
Getting started with vinyl records and turntable setup
To start listening to records, you’ll need a few basic tools. There appear to be an infinite number of options to improve your turntable gear/components and personalize your listening experience.
What do you need to play records?
- Turntable
- Preamplifier
- Amplifier
- Speakers
To begin playing a record, you will require a combination of the above-mentioned components. There are various alternatives to consider depending on the arrangement you want to build. Some of the components are integrated with one another, allowing for a more compact arrangement.
The arrangement you select will be mostly decided by your budget, the amount of physical space available, integration with existing home audio components, and the sort of music experience you seek.
Turntable
The turntable is at the centre of your record-playing experience. The primary function of your turntable is to spin your records at a steady pace, allowing your stylus/needle to follow the record grooves and convert that information into an electrical signal.
When it comes to acquiring a turntable, there is a wide variety of cost available, which is mostly influenced by components, features, construction quality, and specifications.
Preamplifier
A phono preamp’s role is to enhance the low voltage signal produced by your cartridge and amplify it so that it is suitable for your receiver/speakers.
Amplifier
Once you’ve got a turntable and a preamplifier, you’ll need an amplifier to connect to the preamplifier and boost the signal to line level. You might use an A/V receiver, a separate amplifier, or powered speakers with an integrated amplifier (different than pre-amp).
When it comes to amplifiers, there are several factors to consider because they vary greatly in price and functionality. It is important to note that some A/V Receivers also include a built-in pre-amp, allowing you to connect your turntable without the need for a separate pre-amp.
Speakers
To play the music from your turntable, you’ll need some speakers. You have two options: passive or powered speakers. Passive speakers lack its own built-in amplifier and must be driven by an external amplifier, such as an A/V receiver.
The amplifier is linked to these speakers via speaker wire. You may also connect your turntable to powered/active speakers with built-in amplifiers. It’s worth noting that some powered speakers have both an amp and a pre-amp, while others just have an amp.
Common mistakes you should avoid
- Not learning about the sizes & rpms.
- Standard vinyl sizes
- Vinyl sizes and their speeds
Many things should be avoided by someone who is new to collecting vinyl. One of them is not expanding your knowledge. Many newcomers never bother to learn about the various record sizes and RPMs that are available. When visiting places to purchase your first vinyl or turn table, ask the friendly staff around that are more than willing to share their knowledge.
