When comparing artist’s fanbases, not many can come close to the BTS Army (fandom name of Kpop group BTS). They are not only supportive, but they are also extremely protective over the BTS members. There are multiple occasions previously where the Grammys faced backlash over their winners with many fans unhappy with their choices and the voting process, one such example is CardiB’s Invasion of Privacy winning best rap album over Travis Scott’s Astroworld in 2019 edition of the Grammys. It’s no different this year, when BTS lost the award for Best Pop Group Performance for their song Dynamite to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s song Rain on me.
A year ago, RM, a BTS member, mentioned in an interview with Esquire that BTS “would like to be nominated and possibly get an award…I think the Grammys are the last art, like the final part of the whole American journey.” This highlights how important this award is for BTS and the BTS army.
BTS was still set to perform on the live stream afterwards that made, fans feel as though the Grammys were using them for ratings without awarding them.
Enraged as they felt that their beloved boy band was being robbed and scammed. The BTS army got #scammys trending on twitter almost instantly, a cheeky play on Grammy’s titular name.
The loss for the group got all kinds of people unhappy, even big names like Nina Ann Nelson spoke up about the event on twitter.
This year was BTS’s Second nomination, their first one was back in 2019 for best recording package, an award presented for the visual appearance of an album. A win at this year’s Grammys would mean recognition as it would have been awarded for the group’s talent in performing as a band.
On the red carpet at the awards, BTS addressed the fans directly following the loss: “We really want to see Army now and I’m sure Army are feeling the same emotions we’re feeling, so we’ll be back with even greater music, good performances and even better music. So we’ll work hard for this next year as well and we’ll be back with great music and performances that you can look forward to.”
Although they did not win, they kept their promise to the fans by putting on one of the best live performance they have ever done which became the only thing that kept the Grammys enjoyable for the BTS army.
