What is your favourite horror or thriller movie? I have to say mine is probably The Purge. Though it might be a little gruesome and violent, the film is full of suspense that keeps viewers coming back for more.
Previous Films
The Purge franchise started of with their first movie released in 2013. Now, it has a total of four films. For those who are not caught up, here’s a short synopsis. One day in a year, all crimes are made legal, including stealing, usage of weapons and murder. Are you intrigued yet?
The Purge (2013)
The first Purge movie takes a look at the wealthy Sandin family, whose primary breadwinner is a security system mastermind, James Sandin (Ethen Hawke). On the night of the annual purge, just before the siren was heard, the family secured their home with the security system, ensuring that they are safe.
However, James’s son saw a man who needed help from their security camera. He made a bold choice to let the man in. This decision only led them into the hands of a group of “Purgers”. When I first watched the film, I have to say it was pretty terrifying and I absolutely disliked jump scares – spoiler, the movie had plenty of it.
The Purge: Anarchy
The Purge continues and this time, the movie moved away from the Sandin family and shifted the attention to Sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo). He was set to take revenge on the group of men who took the life of his son and wanted to use the Purge as an excuse to wreak havoc.
During the time he was doing so, he stumbled upon a couple who was out when the Purge started. Throughout the film, Leo helped those who were out to seek safety while avoiding the eyes of “Purgers”.
The Purge: Election Year
In this film, Leo served as the Security Chief of Charlene ‘Charlie’ Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell). She was running for President of the United States in 2040, on a platform that’s staunchly anti-Purge. This, of course, did not sit well with Americans.
On the night of the Purge, Charlie was pursued by the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) loyalists in her home. She and Leo had to protect and save themselves from the people who wants the Purge to continue forever.
The First Purge
The First Purge as its name suggest, gives viewers a backstory of how the Purge began. The movie sees the NFFA who have announced their plans to do a test trial of the Purge in Staten Island.
The movie follows two leading characters, activist Nya Charms (Lex Scott Davis) and Dmitri Cimber (Y’lan Noel). Just like other residents, they would have to stay home and wait for the Purge to end and survive the night.
The Forever Purge
The Purge franchise did not end there. Set to show in cinemas on August 5th, 2021, The Forever Purge will depict the Purge as a never-ending event. A group of raiders decided that one day of the Purge is not enough, broke all the rules and made it a never-ending event.
New faces are set to appear in the movie and some of them include:
- Ana de la Reguera as Adela
- Tenoch Huerta as Juan
- Josh Lucas as Dylan Tucker
- Cassidy Freeman as Emma Kate Tucker
- Will Patton as Caleb Tucker
I am pretty excited for the movie to be finally released as it one of favourite movie franchise of all time. I will definitely head down to the cinema to watch it when it is out. Do not forget to mark your calendars and share this with your friends and family!
