Ever since I was a little girl, my father would always dance with me in him room, with my mom watching me as I show off my ‘best’ dance moves. I mean, when I was younger, dancing meant jumping around off-beat to the music.
As I grew older, I knew I has a strong passion for dancing and have dreamt of being on stage, performing in front of a huge audience. I would always imagine my parents watching me, with a huge smile on their face, expressing how proud they are of me.
Though I have performed several times on stage with Style Groovaz Crew, there is always room for improvement. I would go over to YouTube to watch some of my favourite dance crews as they participate in competitions, showcasing their best choreography. That is where I get my inspiration from.
I do have some personal favourite dance crews. They are such talented individuals who have contributed so much to the dance scene and have inspired me to grow as a dancer!
Royal Family Dance Crew
One of the biggest dance crews in the scene is Royal Family. Lead by choreographer Parris Goebel, the crew have performed for many events such as being the guest performers at the Hip Hop International New Zealand Nationals 2018.
Apart from that, they have also worked with several famous artists such as Rihanna, Ciara, and Jennifer Lopez in her opening performance at the VMAs 2015. I am always amazed by their performance. Their moves are so powerful, and I can honestly feel their energy just by watching them from my phone screen.
They never fail to impress, and I am always looking forward for their performances.
Quick Style Crew
This next crew has to be my ultimate favourite. The crew is formed in 2006 by Pakistan-Norwegian twin brothers, Suleman and Bilal Malik and their childhood friend, Nasir Sirikhan. The crew won The Norwegian Got Talent in 2009 and since then has contributed so much to the dance scene.
In the same year, they also started the Quick Style Studio, and it is now one of the most popular dance studios in the country. There is this one showcase that I adore so much. They showcased their piece to the song Crush by Yuna and Usher at Protancy Camp in Russia.
This piece is my absolute favourite, from the choreography to the choice of song. Till this day, I am still in love with the choreography and secretly trying to learn it too!
The Company
I first came across The Company when my father showed me a video of them showcasing their piece during a dance competition, Vibe XIX 2014. I immediate fell in love with them. Their piece for the competition was brilliant, with a unique mix of songs paired with their immaculate synchronization.
Apart from that, they were also guest performers for the closing of Urban Paradise in the same year. The performed to ‘Turn Down for What’ by Lil Jon and DJ Snake. Every time I watch them performance, it makes me want to get up on my feet and dance too.
Power Impact Dancers
This dance crew is based in the Philippines and their crew is huge. The crew is known for their concept videos, which is actually how I came across them. They have participated in several dance competitions such a World of Dance Philippines Qualifier 2016 and World of Dance Championships 2018.
There is one video that I consider one of my favourites from the crew. It is a concept dance video to the Shakira’s song, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. These dancers are extremely talented, and they live up to their name.
These dance crews have made me realise that even though the dance scene is not as big here in Singapore, dance will always be a huge part in my life and that I will never stop dancing. Remember to share this with your friends and family and check out these dance crews on YouTube!
