Pushing the boundaries of what the word “arcade” means, New World Carnival has done it again. With a full VR arcade full of new toys and games to play with, we visited their site to have a look for ourselves!
Step inside the playing area and you are offered several game choices. There are rooms where the VR headset is attached to the wall, so players only move and turn with the wire length limit (cue Matrix vibes here). There are also rooms where free movement of players are allowed and your coordinates will match up to your position in the game (cool right).
The game play process is like how you would play at an arcade. Purchase the credits and tap your card at the game room to start the game. The staff will still be there to assist players to operate the system and gear players up, so do listen to their instructions yeah!
Here is a list of games we tried!
Zombie Jail
This game has three parts, Zombie Jail 1, 2 and 3. Players must escape from the zombies in the jail and fight to survive. The game is made even more realistic by having 4D effects to make it seem more real (we won’t spoil it for you by revealing the effects… XD). Get ready for screams and thrills as you fight off zombie after zombie with some surprises along the way *wink wink*.
Super Ninja
We were playing as warriors protecting the palace from evil doers, and we got to choose our weapons! We get to use either the crossbow, or the katana (it is damn cool). But fair warning, it is a hand workout :P. It is honestly quite fun to be able to swing and hit stuff virtually without breaking stuff. It is a good exercise and can also relief any work stress that you may have!
V of War
*Editor’s Note: This game is currently undergoing repairs and will not be available for now.
Those who are familiar with the movie Ready Player One would recognise this playing device. As players are strapped in, they can then run in-game by running on a dish shaped platform with special sensor shoes! It took us some time to get used to walking on the platform, so be sure to try it for yourself when you are there!
Zombie Way
This game uses wireless tracking system to track where you are in the room, and players wear the VR headset and are free to roam the room. Your avatar’s position in the game will correspond to your position in real life and will move according to the player! Furthermore, you will also be holding replica guns that adds to the whole immersive feel of it all!
Mystery House
Under their most popular horror genre was a game called “The Others”. But, given that we were way to chicken for that (yes, we can get scared too XD), we played a milder kids-friendly version called Mystery House. The gameplay is the same, but the graphics and audio are more friendly to the eyes and ears (and friendlier to our heart rates). We can’t spoil much for you too, but trust us when we say these horror games are insanely immersive and interactive. 🙂
All VR games lasts for about 15mins per round. Though it sounds like a short amount of time, your perception of time changes when you’re in-game and you may get exhausted pretty easily (speaking from personal experience :P). The staff have also advised us to take a break in between session to avoid over exhaustion.
If you would like to book your rooms ahead of time to guarantee your game play, you can book them from their website! They have 3 packages in total that allows you to choose from a specific genre.
New World Carnival is constantly on the lookout for exciting and new games to bring in to enhance the experience so do keep a lookout on their social media to get the latest game updates.
Board Game Lounge
If VR games are not your thing, New World Carnival has got you covered too. They have a side section where you can rent a playing space by the hour and play their huge (and ever growing) variety of board games. From your classics to the indie, they are always on the lookout for new games to bring in!
Co-Working Space
If playing games are not your thing and you’re in town looking for a place to work, they have got you covered as well! A co-working space sits at the side of the area, allowing undisturbed peace as you work. The tables also have power points and office chairs to mimic the office experience.
Snacks and Food
Feeling a bit peckish? By purchasing the full day access pass to the board games lounge and the co-working space, this also entitles you to get a standard snack basket. The snacks are randomly given to customers but if you’re lucky, these baskets could contain some super yummy items!
The day passes for 1 person at the “Chill n Play” lounge is $29/day and the co-working space is at $25/day.
For those looking for a place to chill for a few hours, there is also an ongoing opening promo for the “Chill n Play” Lounge where it is now $5/hour/pax with any purchase of beverages (from $3) at the counter.
Game Credits
Each VR game at the 313 Somerset outlet costs 20 credits/person/game and the Zombie Way (free moving game) costs 30 credits/person/game. You can purchase credits from the counter at the following rates:
- $40 for 60 credits
- $80 for 130 credits
The best thing? The credits last for one full year from the date of purchase!
The recommended number of players per game is between 2-5 pax. And trust us when we say, it is a lot more fun to play in a group and hear your friends scream for their lives (this really happened to us) 😛. Due to Safe Management Measures during this pandemic, there would be no intermingling between groups of players, so it is advised to come with friends to maximize the fun.
Overall
It was an amazing and immersive experience that you need to try in order to become a believer. I too was sceptical of VR gaming. But once you are strapped in and holding the game device, the experience is nothing like you have experienced before. It took us to a whole other realm, and we will definitely be back for more New World Carnival!
You can also experience their games and many more at their outlets stated below!
