If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably seen a few aesthetic pottery videos here and there. The rapidly spinning wheel, the skillful shaping, the transformation of a lump of clay into a beautiful pot… If this makes you think “I want to try that too!”, you’re in luck because there are a variety of pottery studios in Singapore where you can learn wheel throwing!
Hand Building vs Wheel Throwing
There are two main styles of pottery—hand building and wheel throwing. Hand building doesn’t use a potter’s wheel and relies on construction using techniques such as Pinch, Coil and Slab. It’s usually considered easier than wheel throwing because you have more freedom and control over the clay.
Wheel throwing uses a potter’s wheel and is considered more advanced than hand building, partially because there are many more things you need to master before you can make pottery pieces—wedging, centering the clay, opening the vessel and lifting and shaping the walls. It also requires more skill to manipulate the clay on a spinning wheel. Some pottery studios even require you to go through their hand building course before you can sign up for their wheel throwing course.
Price of Classes
Unfortunately, this won’t be a very cheap hobby to pick up. Pottery classes generally cost around $300 to $600 for a series of 5 to 10 sessions, so it’s a pretty major commitment. If you’re not ready to take on a whole course, you can go for an experience session which will cost around $40 to $80 depending on the studio and class length. In this list, we have both full courses and one-time sessions for you!
