Video games comes in many different levels, for some you can finish it within 3 hours or even weeks! Although games can be fun and relaxing, some games have levels that are difficult to beat on purpose just to make your life a little harder. But when you do clear the level or game, the sense of accomplishment is very rewarding. Here are some of the games that I find challenging to play.
A text-based game created in 1971, Oregon Trail is an educational game that teaches children about the life of a 19th century pioneer. Play as a wagon leader who guide your group of chosen settlers from Independence Missouri to the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
While the game may look old and less appealing to the 21st century audience, I personally enjoyed Oregon Trail, from hunting rabbits, crossing rivers and falling ill. Oregon Trail not only teaches the player about the trail’s educational history but also teaches the player how to manage resources which will come in handy in the future. Developed in 2011, Dark Souls is a brutal and unforgiving 3rd person perspective game in which you explore interconnected locations while fighting enemies with weapons and magic. One of the game’s key principles is that it teaches players how to behave in hostile surroundings by encouraging repetition, learning from previous mistakes, and prior experience as a way of conquering the game’s challenges. It has such a huge impact in the gaming industry that it even spun its own genre called the “souls-like” genre.
In my humble opinion I really enjoyed the ambience and the gameplay that Dark Souls has to offer. It’s difficulty and complexity has taught me to enjoy the small victories in life. One of the key elements I loved is how the story is portrayed. By putting together pieces of description and story of items you’ve picked up over the course of the game, it tells a deep and enticing story. A remake of a Ghost’n Goblins NES from 1985, Ghost’n Goblins Resurrection is “easier” compared to its predecessor. Why easier you say? Compared to the remake, Ghost’n Goblins Resurrection offers the player unlimited lives, checkpoints and allows the player to choose its “difficulty”. While that might give newcomers a sense of hope, the game still remains unforgiving and uncompromising in terms of enemy count.
So, what is Ghost’n Goblins Resurrection? Ghost’n Goblins Resurrection is a 2D slide scroller, shoot ‘em up with rudimentary movements that are easy to learn. I’ve tried the game on the hardest difficulty, and it still took me about 2-3hours just to reach the first checkpoint so you have to try the game for yourself here to know what I mean.
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a calming experience where you play as a naked dude stuck in a cauldron waist down. Your only movement is your sledgehammer, which you navigate around with. Bennett Foddy will follow you on your journey, recounting your highs and lows and motivating you with inspirational quotations and soothing jazz.
As said by the creator himself, “I created this game for a certain kind of person. To hurt them”. Much to my annoyance, I’ve unfortunately yet to complete the game. The way the game is setup can undo your entire progress within seconds. The developer openly admits that this game is horribly, bitterly difficult and frustrating by design and that he feels some people’s tastes are suited to this sort of challenge. Try it for yourself today on Steam here to find out more!
Have you tried any of these games before? If so, how long did you take to finish it? Feel free to share your thoughts and games you find hard to beat!
