If you miss Taiwan and are craving some authentic Taiwanese Breakfast, check out True Breakfast at Cuppage Plaza. Nestled at the basement of the building that is seemingly hidden from the streaming crowds one would usually face in Orchard, this is an eatery that prepares your food with lots of love and care.
Be prepared to wait for a while as the food is freshly prepared in a small space, and some items may need a preparation time of 15 minutes or more but we assure you that it will be worth the wait.
Items that are available here are what you can usually find in a humble eatery in the streets of Taiwan such as Omelettes, Thick Toasts and Sandwiches along with the usual coffee and tea offerrings.
For starters, try the Egg Omelette ($3) that will wow you with its simple yet delicious taste and texture. The exterior has a crepe like texture that when eaten has a light and savoury bite. You can also opt for the omelettes that come with additional fillings such as tuna, cheese and meat floss.
The Scallion Pancakes w/ Egg ($5) has a distinctive aroma of scallions, with a crispy exterior. Along with the eggs and special sauce, this is a staple that will make you reminisce the flavours one can only find in Taiwan.
Quite possibly the most expensive item on the menu (unless one goes overboard with the multiple add-ons to their dishes), the Beef & Tendon Noodles ($12) comes with a good amount of tender meat and vegetables that will fill you up. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the broth was rich, flavourful and mildly spicy.
We can’t miss out fried chicken when we think of Taiwan and the Chicken Drumstick Rice ($8) does not disappoint. There wasn’t alot of batter so one can taste the thin and crispy chicken skin while the meat is tender and seasoned lightly. As one who prefers bone-in chicken, this was finger licking good without making me feel guilty about the added calories.
