Many of us in the younger generation, who have a penchant for cakes and pastries, often overlook or are unaware of traditional desserts. However, these desserts hold their own unique charm and flavours profiles that are worth exploring and appreciating.

Chendol

Chendol, though familiar to many, is often overlooked in our regular dessert choices. This sweet and refreshing treat, made with coconut milk, green rice flour jelly, and gula melaka, offers a delightful respite from Singapore’s sweltering heat and is definitely worth indulging in more often.

Bubur Cha Cha

Bubur Cha Cha is a beloved traditional dessert in Singapore. Its creamy coconut-based broth provides a comforting base, while the chunks of yam and sweet potatoes offer a delightful contrast in texture and a burst of sweetness.

The addition of sago pearls adds an additional layer of chewiness, creating a harmonious blend of flavours and textures in every spoonful.

Ondeh Ondeh

Ondeh Ondeh is a delightful sweet treat, consisting of rice cake balls filled with molten palm sugar and coated in fragrant grated coconut. Reminiscent of mochi, Ondeh Ondeh offers a unique taste experience.

With each bite, you’re greeted with a burst of sweetness from the molten palm sugar, perfectly complemented by the chewy texture of the rice cake and the grated coconut coating.

Bak Zhang / Zong Zi

Bak Zhang, a delicacy enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival, is a hearty sticky rice dumpling typically filled with a savoury mixture of meats and other ingredients. With its robust flavours and satisfying texture, Bak Chang is not merely a snack but a substantial meal in itself, making it perfect for those seeking a satisfying culinary experience.
