Want to stan Seventeen but do not know where to start? Overwhelmed by the vast amount of information on the internet? This is the guide that would summarise all you need to know about Seventeen to get you started on this joyride.
Firstly, Carats (The fandom name of Seventeen) must all know the backbone of Seventeen. Seventeen is a K-pop group that debuted in South Korea on 26 May 2015 comprising of 13 members in total: S.coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon and Dino with S.coups being the leader of Seventeen. They were initially under Pledis Entertainment which was then acquired by HYBE entertainment in 2020.
Why is Seventeen called “Seventeen” despite only having 13 members, then? It is not because of the departure of four unknown members, but because 17= 13 members + 3 units + 1 group. Seventeen is divided into 3 smaller units: Hiphop (rap) unit, Performance (dance) unit and Vocal (singing) unit.
The Hiphop Unit comprises of members S.coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu and Vernon, with S.coups being the leader. A personal favourite song of this unit is “Gam3 Bo1”, it is the fourth track of Seventeen’s eighth mini album. The funky song utilises a catchy rhythm which brings an overall fun vibe to the song.
The Performance Unit comprises of members Hoshi, The8, Jun and Dino, with Hoshi being the leader of the unit. A highly recommended song to listen to (and watch) is “13th month’s dance”. With its strong beats and head-bobbing rhythm, it is a song that would hype you up even on the darkest days. The song is accompanied with a powerful dance that showcases the Performance unit’s synchronisation and teamwork skills.
The vocal unit comprises of members Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK and Seungkwan, with Woozi (also a producer for Seventeen and other musicians) being the leader of the unit. The song “Same dream, Same mind, Same night” captured the heart of many with their swoon-worthy voices, melodious melody, and heartfelt lyrics. Perfect for lonely nights under the shimmering stars.
Seventeen had started out rough. They had trouble debuting because Pledis Entertainment went bankrupt at that time, and it was only due to the Vice President of Pledis Entertainment selling his house did they acquire the funds for their debut. Even so, members had to work twice as hard to get their name out there in the world. Members had to become teachers amongst themselves, make their own merch and reach out to radio and variety shows themselves.
Now, they are one of the most famous Korean boy bands out there with album sales as high as over 2.5 million albums sold. If you are looking for a group to stan, Seventeen is definitely worth a shot.
