Have you ever wondered how the food that your parents cook gets served on your lunch or dinner table? Although we import our food from many countries, we have a lot of local farmers in Singapore that produces the food that feeds our families as well.

Currently, 10% of the food we consume is locally produced and Singapore is setting her sights to produce 30% of our nutritional needs by 2030. To do so, NTUC Fairprice has been supporting local farmers and suppliers by carrying their products across its 150 outlets, thereby increasing their visibility and brand awareness.

Why You Should Support Local

More often than not, consumers who are price sensitive prefer imported produce to local produce due to the cheaper prices. With local produce, get to taste the freshness of home and enjoy better nutrition! As the products reach our supermarkets within a shorter amount of time, they retain higher levels of freshness and also has a much lower carbon footprint due to lesser transportation hours needed to put food on our table.

As food produced in Singapore adheres to strict agricultural regulations, there are also reduced chances of wastage caused by spoilage or contamination. With the pandemic as well as climate change on the back of our minds, consciously choosing to purchase locally grown produce, consumers are in turn supporting local farms, and this powers Singapore to become a more self-sufficient nation.

How You Can Support Local

Individual efforts can go a long way in helping to support our local heroes and we all can start by choosing local produce the next time we go grocery shipping. Keep a lookout for the SG Fresh Produce logo, which will help you identify eggs, fish, vegetables and all types of local produce that are proudly cultivated in Singapore.

From 28 Oct to 10 Nov 2021, snag great deals when you shop local at FairPrice and save up to 41% off! Partnering with over 15 local farmers, enjoy various fresh produce and products:
