TikTok has made its way to over 150 countries, with over one billion users. Targeting audience between the age of 13 to 40, this new social media platform has allowed content creators to share their stories.

Apart from the current content available, it has also become a platform for users to influence and spread positivity. Statistics have shown that songs used in the content posted are also trending on Spotify. This indicates the power of TikTok and how it has influenced its users.

According to Tara Wadhwa, a Safety Policy Manager of TikTok US, the platform aims to achieve an environment that allows the community to feel comfortable, confident and safe while expressing themselves.

Body Positivity

Today, body shaming is becoming an issue which will eventually affect individuals or the whole community. Thus, TikTok is imposing policies to help solve this issue. Some policies include advertisements or content posted cannot promote a body negativity.

Florence Simpson, @florence.simpsonn, joined TikTok in May 2020, shared her journey to weight loss and has also encouraged people to love their body. She has also shared some her healthy recipes and workout tips. The video which was posted on October 7th, 2020 has gained over 55.4 thousand likes and 202 comments.

Mental Health

Apart from body shaming, TikTok has also become a safe space for youths struggling with mental health to share their stories and help those who are still struggling. TikTok content creator, Scarlett Curtis, @scarcurtis, opened about her struggles with anxiety, PTSD and depression. She has shared her story on TikTok and has also provided tips to reach out if they are in need.

Culture Appreciation

REMEMBERING THE BLACK HISTORY: The Black community is being recognised through the power of TikTok, sharing their culture through the music and effects introduced to TikTok users.

Other content creators are also sharing their experience with mental health and weight stigmas. The Black culture appreciation has also made its mark on TikTok to celebrate Black History Month. Thus, TikTok content creators from the Black community have been recognised and were nominated by the North America #BlackTikTok community as leaders on and off TikTok.

Use of Creative Effects

Furthermore, TikTok has also introduced creative effects such as stickers to pay homage to the Black community. Music genres such as Jazz, Reggae, Hip Hop and Soul are also introduced in the Sounds page for users.

There is always a good side to social media platforms. It allows users to connect and share their amazing stories. Furthermore, it enhances communication among users and we have the power to use this platform to spread positivity and grow together as a community.

Social media is not just for communication, but a space for positivity. Thus, take this chance to make a difference and stand for what you think is right. With its power to influence users, we should grab this chance to spread such positive messages, encourage change and make a difference.
