The Baking Portal is a boutique baking studio located at Oxley Tower, in the heart of the CBD. It’s run by husband-and-wife pair Shirley and Charlie, who opened the studio as a passion project after going through difficult illnesses and overcoming this darkest period of their lives.
The Baking Portal is unique from other baking and cooking studios, which usually have large classes with many people. The Baking Portal hosts private classes and focuses on creating a bonding experience, which is perfect for friends, couples, families and companies! You can come together and bond over a homely baking session and get to know each other better.
They have different classes teaching you how to make cakes, jellies, pastries and even sourdough bread, as well as more traditional foods like kuehs. They also accommodate vegan and halal dietary requirements in their classes, so feel free to invite any of your friends!
You can check out their list of classes on their website: https://thebakingportal.com/all-classes
Snow Skin Mooncake Workshop
The Baking Portal also offers seasonal classes celebrating holidays like Chinese New Year, Valentines Day and Christmas! On my visit to The Baking Portal, I invited three of my friends from work to attend the Snow Skin Mooncake Workshop in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The class was led by Shirley and her assistant Isabelle, and they taught us everything from making the skin to shaping and decorating the mooncakes.
We made the snow skin from scratch without the use of any premixes. Shirley made sure to guide us step-by-step, and my friends and I had a lot of fun chatting while making the mooncakes!
When it came to shaping the mooncakes, we were given a variety of natural food colourings like matcha, blue pea powder, beetroot powder and charcoal to make our mooncakes bright and colourful. We were then shown how to wrap the filling and shape the mooncakes, and the beautiful examples from Isabelle were very inspiring!
We were taught some simple to intermediate techniques to shape the mooncakes, then were free to decorate ours however we wanted. Whenever we ran into trouble, Shirley and Isabelle were always by our side to help us out!

This Snow Skin Workshop is priced at $68/pax and $120/2 pax, with a minimum of 2 people to start a class. It also uses only halal ingredients.
