The Mid-Autumn Festival is an annual Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is widely celebrated in East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and other communities around the world with mooncakes and tea.
The Folk Lore
One of the main event during the mid autumn festival is the mooncake feast which features a varied selection of Mooncakes. Legend has it that rebels organised an uprising by passing messages hidden in mooncakes during that time to fight against the Yuan China Mongol rule.
Today, you’ll find these mooncakes in many varieties, from traditional flavours with lotus seed paste, red bean and egg yolk, to snowskin versions filled with everything from chocolate to champagne truffle. As times go by, healthier versions with lesser sugar and alternatives were introduced to cater to the health conscious group as well.
Mid Autumn In Singapore
This year, Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 21 September, the festivities begin from early September to early October. One can enjoy an array of light-ups in Chinatown, mooncakes and moon-viewing. Hotels, restaurants and bakeries begin the sale of mooncakes from as early as two months.
But with Covid-19, we will likely see a much toned down celebration with safe distancing measures put in place, but there are still plenty of events to reel in the festivities, not to mention mooncakes to feast on as well.
