If you’ve never heard of The Bedok Marketplace, know that it’s not your regular hawker centre. Similar to concepts like Timbre+ One North, it offers a more upmarket hawker experience featuring a well-decorated centre with restaurant-grade food at affordable prices.
The Bedok Marketplace is home to a variety of stores that offer anything from local fare to burgers and pizzas, making it a great place for groups with varying tastes.
Rong Guang BBQ Seafood
On our visit we tried Rong Guang BBQ Seafood, a store with a pretty illustrious history. They’ve been recognised by various food guides such as the CEOs’ Hawker Guide by The Business Times and Knight Frank, Life!eats by The Straits Times and SPH Magazines and Yummy King on Channel U.
Rong Guang BBQ Seafood even used to have a stall at Makansutra Gluttons Bay, one of the most famous hawker centres in Singapore!
With all these achievements backing Rong Guang BBQ Seafood, we had to give their dishes a try.
$40 Set Meal
We got the $40 set meal, which came with four dishes—BBQ Stingray, Sambal Sotong, Sambal Kang Kong and Egg Fried Rice. This set was a generous portion for the 3 of us who went down, and could probably even feed 4 people if you wanted.
Egg Fried Rice
This fried rice clears all the common pitfalls typical to this dish. It has separate grains coated in just the right amount of oil, no soggy or wet grains in sight. The rice is flavourful with just the right amount of seasoning, making the dish deliciously savoury without overpowering the delicate flavours of the egg.
The Egg Fried Rice is delicious and satisfyingly tasty on its own, while also being a great canvas for flavour when paired with the other dishes! It’s a good choice of carb for this set meal.
BBQ Stingray
If you’re heading to a Singaporean BBQ place, stingray is definitely one of the staple dishes you’re likely to order. This BBQ Stingray has perfectly tender meat and a delicious sambal sauce on top, which is a specialty! Rong Guang takes pride in their sambal sauce, and the care put into it can definitely be tasted in this aromatic, balanced chilli.
Sambal Sotong
Yet another signature sambal-fried dish! The sauce perfectly coats the fresh sotong, and there’s a delicious wok-fried taste thanks to the skilful cooking. The sotong is fried with onion, pineapple and tomato, which add a nice sweetness to the dish.
Sambal Kang Kong
Don’t think any less of this Sambal Kang Kong just because it’s a vegetable dish and not a seafood dish! I watched the boss Chef Joe himself make this, and he skilfully tossed the kang kong over super high heat, letting the huge flame touch the vegetables with every flip.
You can taste the result of this skilful frying in the final dish, where the kang kong is aromatic, imbued with the delicious fragrance of sambal and garlic, and not soggy at all.
Come check out Rong Guang BBQ Seafood, which serves restaurant-quality BBQ dishes at an affordable price!
