Places To Visit When You Fly To Taiwan

Heading to Taiwan? Here are some recommended places to visit that will guarantee you a good time no matter the company!

Taipei 101

Formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, Taipei 101 is an iconic skyscraper located in Taipei, Taiwan. 

Taipei 101 was the world’s tallest building from 2004 to 2010, and it remains one of the tallest green buildings globally. 

Taipei 101 offers visitors a breathtaking observatory on the 89th and 91st floors, providing panoramic views of the beautiful Taipei City and its surrounding areas. Go during sunset or at night where you get to see the best views of the city skyline!

The lower floors of Taipei 101 house a luxury shopping mall, featuring an extensive range of high-end international and local brands like Gucci and Rolex. The mall also boasts a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, and food courts.

As one of Taipei’s most famous events, Taipei 101 hosts an internationally renowned New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

Jiufen & Shifen

“Spirited Away” fans would definitely know this place! Many visitors come to Jiufen to experience the magical ambiance depicted in the film, as it is believed to have drawn inspiration from the village.

Jiufen is a charming mountain village located in northern Taiwan, known for its rich history, stunning views, and unique atmosphere. 

Jiufen features narrow alleyways, stone staircases, and old-fashioned teahouses that reflect its traditional architecture and historical charm.

If you are a tea lover, you will be satisfied with the number of teahouses you’ll be able to find offering various types of tea, including the renowned Taiwanese tea..

Known for its delicious street food and snacks, try local specialties such as taro balls and pork sausages.

While Shifen and Jiufen are not particularly close to each other, you can visit them on the same day.

To reach Shifen from Jiufen, you can take public transport.

Shifen is famous for its sky lantern tradition, where visitors can write their wishes or messages on lanterns and release them into the sky. It’s a magical experience, so do try it out!

Shifen is home to the Shifen Waterfall, one of Taiwan’s most beautiful waterfalls. The waterfall plunges from a height of around 20 meters and is surrounded by lush greenery. 

You can visit the Pingxi Branch Rail Line that passes through Shifen. It is a historic railway route that dates back to the early 20th century. Riding on the vintage train is a nostalgic experience that visitors can enjoy and see scenic landscapes, old bridges, and tunnels along the way.

Raohe Night Market

Raohe Night Market is renowned for its wide variety of delicious street food and local delicacies where you can indulge in a mouthwatering array of Taiwanese cuisine. Not only are there delicious food along the street, there are also numerous stores that you can visit and shop at.

Some food famous to Raohe Night Market are:

  • Fuzhou Pepper Buns – Also known as hu jiao bing, these baked buns are filled with juicy pork and marinated with fragrant spices, including Sichuan peppercorns, giving them a deliciously spicy kick.
  • Stinky Tofu – Also known as chou doufu, the tofu is fermented, giving it a pungent aroma, but with a delicious and savoury taste. 

The market’s setting retains a traditional atmosphere with its narrow alleyways, vibrant red lanterns, and historic buildings. As you stroll through the market, you’ll experience the charm of old Taipei and get a glimpse into the city’s past.

At the entrance of the night market stands the Ciyou Temple, a popular Taoist temple dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu. Take a moment to explore the temple’s complex architecture, intricate carvings, and colourful decorations. 

Whether you’re a food lover, shopper, or cultural explorer, visiting Raohe Night Market is a great way to immerse yourself in Taipei’s bustling night market scene.
