Who doesn’t appreciate a plate of warm tacos, gooey enchiladas, or a pile of salty tortilla chips and handmade guacamole while sipping a large margarita? It certainly makes me happy. I don’t simply like Mexican food; I actually crave it. So here are some places that I like to visit when the cravings strike.
Chimi’s
Chimi’s is my favourite Mexican cantina in the CBD, having set up shop in a 20-foot shipping container. After work, gather your friends for frozen margaritas and ice-cold draft beers, which you can match with light meals like tacos, quesadillas, and nachos. What’s the best part? You can take in all of them while taking in the breath-taking scenery of the Marina Bay.
Address: 1 Marina Boulevard 01-01 NTUC Centre, 018989
Opening Hours: Sun – Thur (3pm to 11pm) | Fri & Sat (2pm to 12am)
Super Loco Customs House
Super Loco Customs House is the place to go for tacos and all things Mexican. The Fullerton Heritage precinct’s contemporary Mexican Cocina Y Bar boasts amazing views of Marina Bay Sands and the coastline. Take a seat outside under the fairy lights and order from a menu of antojitos (snacks) and para la familia (for the family) (large plates).
Barbecued corn on the cob ($8) with chipotle mayo and cojita cheese, tacos with roasted pork shoulder ($12) and braised beef brisket ($10), and the pescado ($34) with sustainably farmed barramundi, salsa verde, and corn tortillas are among the highlights.
Address: 70 Collyer Quay, #01-04 Customs House, Singapore 049323
Opening Hours: Mon – Sat (11.30am to 10.30pm)
Cafe Iguana
The food here at Café Iguana has remained genuinely Mexican since the turn of the millennium in a location near the Singapore River. To begin, order the Camarones al Diablo ($25), which consists of prawns sautéed in a hot habanero sauce with capsicums and other spices and served with cheese and quesadillas.
If that isn’t enough, the menu also includes fajitas ($25-$30), tacos ($5-$7), and main courses including red snapper enchiladas ($28) and a variety of grilled meats. If the heat gets too much, try one of their frozen Margaritas for a chilly treat.
Address: 30 Merchant Road #01-03 Riverside Point, 058282
Opening Hours: Mon – Thur (5pm to 11pm) | Fri – Sat (12pm to 12am) | Sun (12pm to 11pm)
Vatos Urban Tacos
Vatos Urban Tacos, a Korean-Mex chain based in Seoul, combines delectable ganjang – and ssamjang-marinated meats – with chaotic Mexican food. Tacos (from $10) are usually a straightforward mix of affordable meats, vegetables, and citrus. Vatos, however, shines even in this situation. The shells are silky, bouncy coverings that resemble popiah skins, rather than rough cornmeal circles.
Address: 36 Beach Rd, #01-03 South Beach Quarter, Singapore 189766
Opening Hours: Tue – Sun (12pm – 10.30pm) | Closed on Mondays
So next time you feel like having some tacos you know where to find them. Buying some to share with your family and friends to share will make the food taste great as the meals here are better enjoyed with the ones you love.
