Photography Trail | Places For Analog Photography In Singapore

Though the world of digital photography is by far the most dominant medium, analog photography is still around. It has seen an increase in popularity over the last decade as people discover and enjoy the slow process of developing a film.

Lucky enough, there are still a sufficient supply of well-stored film stocks and good used film cameras. I personally am into film photography, but it can be pretty expensive. Especially in Singapore, where a film stock can cost from SGD 8 onwards and developing one film stock can start from SGD 10.

Therefore, shots taken must be somewhat decent in order not to waste your precious film. There are some places that I have visited numerous times because of its uniqueness and charm and I do recommend people to visit these places.

Tiong Bahru

This neighbourhood is filled with rich heritage that has remain unchanged for the longest period of time. When you step into Tiong Bahru, it may seem as though one has went back in time. Although trendy cafes, boutiques and patisseries are popping up and making Tiong Bahru their home, it is also well known for its old school housing that depicts a series of beautifully painted scenes.

Marina Barrage

Possibly one of the best spots to get a view of Singapore skyline. Marina Barrage is a popular spot for locals to enjoy picnics and fly kites, all of which is a good subject for your film photos. In general, people would set up their tripod that would allow them to capture the magnificent panoramic shot of Singapore. This is also a great place for plane spotters and also to capture the light show at Marina Bay Sands.

East Coast Park/Road

Filled with greenery and colourful shophouses. East Coast Park is very iconic and well-known among locals. Gorgeous architecture, charming detail and its brilliant colours make the perfect backdrop if you are considering to fill your feed with a lot of different colours. Additionally, after a long day of shoot, you can head over to the many eateries present around the area.

Toa Payoh

Shot using Kodak Portra 400

Toa Payoh is known for its iconic landmarks such as the dragon playground and has long been considered as one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Singapore. Visitors would have the chance to learn more about its culture and history. However, I prefer to roam around their wet markets as I feel it is where I can shoot some hidden gems around the area.

These are a few places that I always visit for film photography. If you have other places to recommend, do feel free to leave your comments below or visit these places to experience it for yourself.
