Orchid Live Seafood sets themselves apart from other live seafood restaurants with their signature Teochew-style cooking. Having opened their second outlet at HomeTeamNS Khatib in August 2020 during the peak COVID-19 period, they are now welcoming patrons back to dine in.

Orchid Live Seafood is one of the major direct importers of lobster in Singapore, bringing fresh seafood into their store daily. When you order any of their seafood dishes, you can watch them fish your catch right out of the tank to be cooked!

The Dishes

Live Lobster Porridge

The signature dish here is the Live Lobster Porridge (from $72). Orchid Live Seafood was actually the first to bring this Teochew dish to Singapore, and it has since become a crowd favourite.

Each pot uses broth that has been simmered for no less than four hours, allowing the best sweetness and flavour to be released. Indeed, when we tried this dish, the broth was deeply fragrant, warm and comforting. When you take a bite with the lobster, it’s a sumptuous mouthful to be savoured.

You can pick from four types of lobsters available: Tropical Lobsters, Western Australian Lobsters, Southern Australian Lobsters and Boston Lobsters. We had Southern Australian Lobster with this porridge, which is one of the most premium varieties out there. These Rock Lobsters have delicate yet firm flesh and a generous meat-to-shell ratio that’s almost double of the other lobster species! When we tried this lobster, the fresh meat was delicious—succulent and firm, with a mild and sweet taste.

If porridge isn’t a type of dish you like, you can enjoy other styles of cooking like Butter Coated, Garlic Steamed and Cream Cheese.

Lobster Salad

The Lobster Salad ($158 for 4-6 pax) is a newly launched dish filled with large chunks of lobster, honeydew, cantaloupe and celery and mixed with a house-made mayonnaise sauce. The dish is crowned with uni as a finishing touch, making this a decadent starter! It tastes refreshing and sweet, with creamy and fruity notes.

Want a break from seafood? The Signature Steven Chicken ($16/8pcs, $24/12pcs, $30/16pcs) features deep fried chicken coated in a sticky marmite and honey sauce. It’s named after the founder and creator of the restaurant Chef Steven Chua, and it has a delicious and addictive flavour! It’s also very easy to eat, thanks to the meat being pushed to the end of the bone before cooking.

Lobsters aren’t the only shellfish available at Orchid Live Seafood. The Salt Baked Yellow Roe Crab ($120 for 2 pieces) lets you indulge in roe-filled mud crab that has been baked with salt and house-blend spices!

The term “roe-filled” is no exaggeration—each piece is filled with a generous amount of creamy and richly flavourful crab roe. The meat also has a lot of natural sweetness thanks to this traditional cooking method.

Garlic Steamed Bamboo Clams

The Garlic Steamed Bamboo Clams ($16.80/pc) dishes up extra large bamboo clams that have been simply steamed with soya sauce. The vermicelli and garlic topping add an extra dimension of flavour without overpowering the natural flavours of the clam, making this well-balanced dish a treat for your tastebuds.

HK Style Steamed Soon Hock Fish

The traditional HK Style Steamed Soon Hock Fish ($8/100g) is a simple yet well-prepared dish. It’s steamed with soya sauce and a light touch of preserved turnips for some acidity, which is the perfect complement for this naturally delicate and fragrant fish.

Seasoned Fried Baby Squid

The Seasoned Fried Baby Squid ($23) is a simple yet addictive dish. The fresh deep-fried baby squid is accompanied by a sriracha mayo sauce, a sweet sauce and a wasabi mayo sauce.

You can also get the Seasoned Fried Baby Squid with Sweet and Spicy Thai Sauce ($23), which features the deep-fried baby squid together with a fragrant Thai sauce.
