As technology advances, it continually expands the possibilities for digital art. The ArtScience Museum in Singapore is set to unveil its latest exhibition, Notes From the Ether: From NFTs to AI Exhibition from 19 August 2023 to 24 September 2023.

Introducing digital arts driven by technologies, contemporary artists are revolutionising the creative boundaries through use of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Here are some highlights that are not to be missed!

Highlights

1. Collective Futures

This exhibit seeks to illustrate the complexity of all ecosystems and humanity’s collective future, addressing the interconnection between humans and machines. It is a large-scale video and sound installation celebrating life, nature and the universe.

The work is a contemplative and spiritual journey, which reflects the imagination of an artificial neural network through shifting images and sounds.

Deep Meditations: A brief history of almost everything (still), 2018 by Memo Akten

Visitors can leave their own stamp on the world of digital art through a special collaboration between akaSwap, TZ APAC and ArtScience Museum titled Chaos & AI Research. Upload a photo of your choice that will be transformed by AI and turned into art on the Tezos blockchain. Finally, take home a piece of the exhibition by minting your artworks as a NFT.

2. Coded Possibilities

Warning! For those who struggle with CSS and an existential crisis, this exhibition will blow your mind. This piece speaks to programmers and audio enthusiasts as opportunities to revel in the digital artworks created with code and algorithms.

Series 0 Synth Poems #8 (still), 2022 by DEAFBEEF

Check out Series 0 Synth Poems by DEAFBEEF, consisting of pieces which incorporate frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. More commonly known for their use in broadcast radio, FM synthesis can create rich and harmonic sounds.

Interestingly, this art was illustrated as its audio channels were mapped to an oscilloscope, an instrument that produces a visualisation from an audio wave (P.s. For those who are interested, the piece is created using the computing language C and Ethereum blockchain).

3. Expanded Self I

This gallery immerses visitors in variations of digital identity, seeking to be a reminder that digital technology such as deepfakes, personable chatbots and generative AI is becoming an extension of the physical self.

Do look out for the interactive installation that invites visitors to a custom-built recording booth to freely create art via real-time voice transfer. Highlighting the limitless creative possibilities of AI voice models.

Thoughts and Opinions
The canvas has expanded beyond physical constraints, allowing artists to push the boundaries of imagination and expression. Yet, even as we embrace these sometimes uncomfortable developments, the essence of art’s ability to evoke emotions, thoughts and connect souls remains unaltered.

Yet another reminder that it is not the tool that defines the artist but the message that can resonate with those who experience it. But that’s just our view, what are your thoughts on digital art?
