With its global premiere on October 21st 2023, the ArtScience Museum’s exhibition titled “New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed” introduces visitors to alternative realms and offers fresh perspectives on science fiction by featuring the works of 24 women artists and collectives from Asia.
Delving into the intersections between Western science fiction and Eastern spiritual traditions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and Shintoism, the exhibition aims to challenge the historically Western and male-dominated science fiction genre by foregrounding diverse voices of women artists.
It features close to 70 contemporary artworks, historical artifacts, and film extracts to shed light on the connections between science fiction and Asian philosophy and mythology.
Curated by Gail Chin, Joel Chin, Adrian George and Honor Harger from ArtScience Museum, New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed unfolds across eight chapters.
Notably, it explores concepts such as parallel universes, interdimensional travel, and transcendence with their roots in Asian philosophy, suggesting that some science fiction tropes may have originated in Asia.
“New Eden” is part of a season at ArtScience Museum that focuses on science fiction from an Asian and women’s perspective.
It seeks to celebrate the convergence of ancient mythology, contemporary art, and post-modern cinema, offering a platform for alternative voices and visions for a more inclusive future.
This season aims to not only challenge outdated cultural clichés but also showcase how artists in Asia are shaping and reclaiming the science fiction genre on their own terms.
New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed will run from 21 October 2023 to 3 March 2024. For more information, visit www.marinabaysands.com/museum/exhibitions/new-eden.html
