Tea-time is a great time to have a quick break from work or school. We head down to get a quick snack and drink before shifting our attention back to our tasks. Some items include baked goods like cakes, pastry and beverages such as tea.
There are so many cafes and shops offering tea-time snacks. If you love traditional Hainanese snacks for tea-time break, you are in luck as The Hainan Story will be adding new items to their tea-time menu.
The Hainan Story
The Hainan Story by Baoshi is one of the biggest congregations of Hainanese cuisine in one place, paying tribute to the Hainanese who arrived in Singapore after the British. The restaurant started of as a 5-in-one multi brand Hainanese restaurant in Hillion Mall.
However, the second outlet at Hotel Boss brings together more concepts that equally celebrates the best of Hainanese cuisine. Their menu features creations of Hainanese chefs from Boashi’s in-house culinary team and young chefs.
New Tea-Time Menu Items
Many would already be familiar with their kaya toast and must-try Newspaper Hainanese Curry Rice. In addition to these favourites, The Hainan Story will be adding several new items for the tea-time menu.
Some of these menu items include the Hainanese traditional kueh, yi bua, a new iteration of toas buns, cakes, and bubble tea!
Hainanese Yi Bua
Bringing it back from Hainanese past, The Hainan Story will be adding the traditional yi bua on the menu. This traditional kueh may not be easily found elsewhere. Normally served during special occasions like weddings, these traditional steamed dumplings are made with glutinous rice and potato flour.
It is then filled with a sweetened mixture of palm sugar, jaggery red sugar, grated coconut, ginger and crushed roasted peanuts. Afterwards wrapped in sheets of banana leaves and steamed, resulting in a pillowy soft sweet treat. From July 12th onwards, you will get to have a taste of these sweet Hainanese steamed dumplings for only $7.90 (6 pieces – 3 traditional, 3 peanut).
Hainanese MONGA Crispy Chic Toast Bun
In collaboration with Taiwanese XXL crispy chicken, the restaurant is proud to present their MONGA Crispy Chic Toast Bun burger-sandwich hybrid. It is served with a fillet of MONGA’s signature fried chicken. It is also served with sides such as coleslaw, Hainanese curry sauce and a sweet and sour tomato sauce.
This menu item is only available for a limited time, till July 31st, 2021. You can find all complements at The Hainan Story, and the coleslaw version at MONGA Singpost Centre and JEM. Also, enjoy your meal as a set with Iced Lemon Tea for only $9.90.
The Hainan Story Butter Cakes
Apart from the traditional Hainanese yi bua and MONGA Crispy Chic Toast Bun, four new cake flavours will also be added to the menu. These Asian-inspired butter cakes are sure to sweeten up your next tea-time.
These cakes include Run & Raisin Butter Cake, The Tarik Butter Cake and Kopi Guyou Butter Cake ($9.00 per roll; $2.80 per slice). There is also the Deluxe Heritage Banana Cake ($8.00 per roll; $2.80 per slice).
Boacha Bubble Tea Series with Konjac Pearls
If you ask me, tea-time is the best time for some bubble tea. Skip your regular beverage orders for tea-time and try the new bubble tea items, in collaboration with Baocha. The series includes two bubble tea flavours that will tempt even the most discerning bubble tea enthusiast.
These flavours include Hazelnut Earl grey Milk Tea and Hazelnut Ooong Milk Tea. Both of these bubble tea flavours come with a choice of konjac pearls for a healthier alternative. These beverages are priced between $4.50 to $4.80.
