Did you know that cosmetics and personal hygiene products may contain pork? This is because glycerin, a commonly used ingredient to moisten these products can be derived from pork fat.

Glycerin can be made from plants, animal fats or also chemically synthesized. As it is often difficult to establish what type of glycerin is used in these products, we would recommend looking for products that have the halal or vegan label when in doubt.

As of June 2022, Singapore’s homegrown oral care brand Pearlie White® is now Halal certified with their own oral care manufacturing facility producing locally made toothpastes and mouth rinses.

In a process that took over 18 months, Pearlie White® aimed to build a reputation of trust and integrity for its products to the Muslim community. Filed with Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), all of the different ingredients used in Pearlie White’s toothpaste and mouth rinse variants had to be halal certified.
