Immortal Variables | A Cross-Border Modern Sci-Fi Theatre Production Focusing On Technology vs Humanity

A kidnapping of the country’s president. A system to predict the future through data analysis. A technology secretly planted to control human minds. An anti-government organisation. A monitored phone call. A plan within a plan.

What is the password? Who is the mole? What are the odds? Who can really control the variables?

“Immortal Variables” or 八仙变数 is a modern sci-fi fable set in the near future, created through a five-year cross-border collaboration between Singaporean theatre company Nine Years Theatre and Hsing Legend Youth Theatre, the youth wing of Contemporary Legend Theatre from Taiwan.

The play delves into the rising tension between technology and ethics, exploring themes such as data privacy and the subconscious influence of technology and social media on individuals.

With a plot filled with deception, tricks, and twists, the production aims to offer new perspectives on the relationship between technology and humanity.

The final production has a cast from both Singapore and Taiwan. Singapore actors Mia Chee, Ryan Ang and Ching Shu Yi will be performing alongside young Chinese Opera actors from Taiwan – Howie Chu, Yang Jui-Yu, Eason Lin, Huang Jo-Lin, and Ivy Chen.

Crowdfunding Campaign

To support this cross-border collaboration, Nine Years Theatre initiated a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to promote artistic exchanges between Singapore and Taiwan.

As a gesture of gratitude, donors are offered complimentary tickets, autographed programme booklets, premium tea (Tie Guan Yin Autumn Harvest, worth $69.80) from Pek Sin Choon and red wine (Raymond Usseglio Le Peche Originel Sans Soufre 2020, worth $79) from CornerStone Wines.

Immortal Variables will first be performed in Taipei from 22 to 24 September 2023, then in Singapore at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre at Wild Rice, Funan from 6 to 8 October 2023.
