Warning: This show is not for the faint of heart. What would you do if you were given the power to reveal everyone’s secrets? That isn’t a question for the lead in Netflix’s new international thriller, it is a reality. Girl from Nowhere is a Thai mystery horror drama about a risky and devoted adolescent girl who uses her charms and wit to uncover corruption and deception in a set of schools.
The second season, as the first, is an anthology series in which each episode features a new story and character. The series is easy to watch because each episode is like a short film. You could start watching every episode without watching the previous as every episode tells a different story.
However, the arrival of a new main character, Yuri (Chanya McClory), a schoolgirl who becomes immortal after meeting Nanno, as seen in episode four, Yuri, sets the second season apart. However, it is still unclear if Yuri is a friend or a foe. We can only presume Yuri has the same, if not higher, level of intelligence as Nanno based on the hints in the first four episodes.
The second season contains eight stories, each of which is largely believed to be based on a true news story in which justice was not delivered. Nanno, using her supernatural abilities, changes the result of these tales so that the criminals can finally reap what they sow.
This isn’t to suggest the Girl From Nowhere is suitable for all audiences. In particular, these karmic retributions are ruthless, and they’re often portrayed in gruesome and unimaginable scenes. You may not be able to handle the series if you can’t tolerate horror. If you do choose to watch it, do it with someone.
Nanno is played by Kitty in a creepy way that is utterly perfect. On the surface, she appears to be a normal, attractive high school student. However, when she looks coldly into the camera with a wry grin under this mask, it can send shivers down your back, and you know it means danger or that some stuff is going to go down. Her indifference to graphic actions and hysterical laughter can lead you to believe Nanno is insane.
The story can be a little misleading at times and less impactful than they should have been because Girl From Nowhere is fundamentally based on Nanno’s supernatural ability. Based on an interview the actress had done, it is believed that Nanno is “like the daughter of Satan or the snake from the Garden of Eden who comes to Earth to give forbidden fruit to humans (and) she’s here to test how evil humans can be.”
It’s also hard to say whether Nanno is a hero or a traitor because she seems to be on no one’s side and does whatever she wants. The being said, the show has undeniably garnered a huge following and have received more compliments than criticism with a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDb. Interested to watch or know more?
