Flipside 2021 | Celebrate Playfulness and Creativity

Watch eye-opening performances and engage in fun-filled workshops as Esplanade presents Flipside 2021!

Another art event is coming our way! Esplanade is known to organise a wide range of art events such as theatre, music, and dance performances. Offering a several event spaces such as studios and theatres, Esplanade remains one of the top event venues for the art scene here in Singapore.

This year, Esplanade will host Flipside 2021, a festival that celebrates creativity and playfulness through exciting performances including circus, puppetry, theatre and comedy. Let’s look at what is in store for us at Flipside 2021!

Circus Art

Aerial Open Stage and RE:STARVED

Want to enjoy a night full of experimental high-flying performances, such as pre-premiere pieces to works in progress performed by 16 Singaporean aerialists. Exploring the power of touch, RE:STARVED is a circus piece showcasing how the pandemic has allowed the fear of contact and the physical environment.

This piece is brought to you by Bonfire Circus, a social circus founded in 2005. Having conducted over 11 circus festivals, the group has also conducted cross-disciplinary exchange between practitioners from various platforms.

Aerial Open Stage and RE:STARVED: Esplanade Open Theatre

Dates: 28th – 30th May 2021

Timing: 7.30pm and 9.30pm

Contact Juggling Workshop

Want to learn the basic circus act of juggling? Flipside 2021 offers you with several workshops. The Contact Juggling Workshop teaches you the form of juggling with a single ball, with the use of balance to create lightness.

You will get the opportunity to learn a short sequence, covering basics such as rolling, isolations and balances. The workshop will provide you with equipment such as a round object such as a stress ball, and a long cylindrical object such as an empty water bottle. However, you can also bring your own!

This workshop will be facilitated by Zheng Hao, who is juggling for quite some time now. He enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge and skills with others.

Comedy

Ping Pong Circus

This theatre performance pays tribute to nimbleness and quick reactions. Performers will display their moves, using every trick from magic to physical comedy and circus. Sit back and enjoy as you watch how this ping pong match will end.

Ping Pong Circus is brought to you by Circus in Motion founded by Jay Che. It specialises in live performances with the creative use of geometrical shapes in their circus acts. They are also the first circus company to perform using the Cyr Wheel, giant cube, and ultraviolet pyramids.

Dates: 30th May and 6th June 2021

Timings: 3.00pm and 4.30pm

Flip Slides: A PowerPoint Karaoke Show

This improv comedy show is made up entirely from a series of PowerPoint slides. The comedy segments are presented by guest artists and comedy presenters based on the topics you choose!

POWERPOINT KARAOKE: A show about presentation and more

Run by Liau Yun Qing and Darren Foong, PowerPoint Karaoke is a comical show about presentation slides and other topics. They have gathered audiences with humorous presentations and a dating spin-off (Date My Friend).

Puppetry

I Know Something You Don’t Know

I Know Something You Don’t Know is a theatre performance with the use of puppets. It is a non-verbal mask-and-puppet performance that will be performed to one person privately. The story told is about an old man surrounded by his children, who are all saddened by the loss of a loved one.

This show is brought to you by Papermoon Puppet Theatre which has created over 30 puppet performances and visual art installations and exhibitions. The company launched Pesta Boneka in 2008 that welcomes puppeteers from all around the world.

I Know Something You Don’t Know: Online

Dates: 28th May – 6th June 2021

Premieres on 28th May, Friday at 8.00pm

Frankie’s Puppet Studio

This experience allows you to watch master puppeteer and puppet maker, Frankie Yeo at work. Feast your eyes on the displayed puppets, with each having a personality of its own. You get to gain more knowledge about the creative process of a puppeteer from start to end.

Apart from that, you can also enjoy a puppetry demonstration accompanied by music and humour. It features puppetry creations, and the creative magic behind the use of puppets.

Frankie’s Puppet Studio: Esplanade Recital Studio

Dates: 29th – 30th May and 5th – 6th June 2021

Timing: 3.00pm, 4.00pm and 5.00pm

This is a well-rounded event, touching on the various areas of art itself. It is sure to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for you and your friends and family. Head down to Esplanade on these dates and experience an art event like never before.
