Adulting can be difficult and as you only live once, it’s crucial to know or just remind yourself some of these essential life lessons that I think is important. These are often things people don’t tell you or warn you about, but they are vital for navigating life’s challenges. Here are some reminders to keep you going as we all navigate our lives and future ahead:
1) You don’t have to know what you like; just know what you don’t like.
We often feel lost in life, regardless of the phase we’re in, whether it’s choosing schools, new jobs, or new places. During these times, we may not know what we want. But that’s okay.
Start by eliminating what you don’t want and try your luck with the remaining options. This approach will bring you closer to discovering what you truly want.
2) Learn to build and maintain meaningful connections.
Connections are important everywhere, providing benefits you might not foresee. You never know when you’ll need these people in your life.
Instead of cutting them off or drifting apart, make an effort to sustain these relationships. Don’t be so quick to drop them.
That friend that sat next to you in class for many years could just be the person to lift you to the next level when you are lost or at a crossroad in life.
3) Embrace openness to new experiences and possibilities.
Adaptability is crucial, especially in our ever-changing world. Instead of remaining solely in your comfort zone, embrace the ability to adapt to new surroundings.
While consistency has its merits, exploring new opportunities and gaining fresh experiences can enrich your life.
If you continue to remain in the same pond, you may never discover the next gushing river or open sea with wider opportunities that can broaden your horizons.
4) There will always be people who excel in areas where you may not.
Sure, you might attend prestigious schools, earn scholarships, land high-paying jobs, have a perfect family, or be wealthy. However, as the Chinese saying goes, “一山还比一山高 (there will always be a mountain taller than the last).”
With countless individuals in the world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison and envy.
Instead, focus on self-improvement for your own sake, not to compete with others. There will always be someone better, so prioritise your personal growth and fulfillment.
5) You can’t please everyone, no matter how hard you try.
There will always be people who dislike or even hate you, sometimes for no reason at all.
While constructive criticism can be valuable for self-improvement, there’s no need to try to please those who harbor unfounded animosity toward you.
Focus instead on those who genuinely love and care for you—they’re the ones whose opinions truly matter.
