Don’t Runaway: Joo Chiat’s Bold New (and Free!) Sandwich Pop-Up

Get ready, Joo Chiat. A brand-new sandwich rebel is here to shake things up. Don’t Runaway is the city’s coolest free sandwich pop-up, and it’s bringing bold flavours with zero rules.

Don’t Runaway isn’t here to play nice. It’s here to push boundaries, break rules, and pack flavour into every bite. The founders describe it as a cross between food and theatre — a fast, chaotic, high-energy experience that turns a simple sandwich into an edible rebellion.

Founder Hoh Loyi knows her sandwiches. In 2023, she embarked on a three-month journey across the US, devouring everything from New York pastrami to Chicago meatball subs. That trip sparked one big idea: a sandwich can be comfort food, creativity, and chaos all rolled into one.

But Singapore didn’t have anything like it. So she built it herself.

What Makes Don’t Runaway Different?

This isn’t your ordinary café launch. Don’t Runaway keeps things raw, loud, and unpredictable. There’s no lengthy menu, no safe bets. Instead, each weekend features one star sandwich only. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

That means no repeats, no do-overs. Just a constant rotation of bold experiments designed to surprise and delight.

Expect messy stacks. Expect sauces dripping. Expect flavours you didn’t think belonged together but somehow just work.

The Sandwich Line-Up: Bold, Messy, Brilliant

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the sandwiches that will steal the spotlight:

  • The Side Chick – Smoked chicken with attitude. Punchy white sauce. Pumpkin seed dukkah crunch. It’s like a shawarma that just started a street fight — smoky, saucy, and unapologetically messy.

  • Mortadel-lah – Mortadella piled high with creamy stracciatella. A salsa verde kick. A yuzukosho zing. It’s indulgent, chaotic, and absolutely unforgettable.

  • Jack & Loaded – Proof that plant-based doesn’t mean boring. Smoky jackfruit chilli stacked like the real deal, loaded with flavour, and ready to convert even the most hardcore carnivore.

  • Beef Me Up – The sandwich you never knew you needed. Yakiniku brisket meets peanut butter, spiked with a four-hour slow-cooked tallow chilli crunch. Think Tan Tan Mian in sandwich form. Unexpected? Totally. Regret? Zero.

How to Claim Your Free Sandwich

Why You Need to Be There

Don’t Runaway isn’t just food. It’s an experience. It’s about showing up hungry, walking away messy, and living in the moment.

It’s also the rarest kind of deal in Singapore: premium sandwiches, zero dollars. The catch? You just have to show up before they’re gone.

The team hints that this pop-up is only the beginning. Feedback from diners will shape their upcoming brick-and-mortar restaurant. So, if you’ve ever wanted to influence the next big food concept in Singapore, now’s your chance.

Final Bite

If you love food that surprises you, if you crave flavours that don’t follow the rules, and if you enjoy a little chaos with your comfort food — Don’t Runaway is the pop-up to watch.

Just remember: the sandwiches are free, but the attitude is priceless.
