Birthstones and their vibrant colours have long served as a link between your birth month and rare and distinctive gemstones. They make a thoughtful gift for a particular occasion for mom, a friend, a husband, or a family member. But, as you’ll see below, they’re much more than that.

January (Garnet)

The birthstone for people born in the month of January is garnet. In the 14th century, “garnet” referred to a deep crimson tint and is the embodiment of the energies of fire, passion, creativity, and strength.

Garnet is a deep red gem that may be worn with almost any form of jewellery that will definitely be the centre of attention. Apart from the usual jewellery that women adorn, low-grade garnets are commonly used in abrasive water jets that remove coatings or corrosion.

February (Amethyst)

The birthstone for those born in the month of February is an amethyst. The name amethyst comes from the Greek word methustos, which approximately translates to “intoxicated.” It was thought in the past that wearing an amethyst would keep you from getting drunk in ancient Greece. Amethyst is said to offer protection, humility, spiritual wisdom, and stress relief.

Amethyst is formed when certain imperfections in quartz combine to generate a purple colour. The deep purple of amethyst has traditionally been associated with royalty, and it may be found in numerous crowns and regal jewels.

March (Aquamarine)

The birthstone for people born in the month of March is aquamarine. The word aquamarine is made up of two words: aqua, which means water, and marina, which means sea. A stone of courage, aquamarine’s calming energies reduces stress and quiets the mind.

Aquamarine has a clear and pretty luster and is a specimen of the beryl mineral. It’s shade can range from very pale to vibrant while evoking the colours of the sea. This gem’s history includes sailors using it to bring them good luck on the high seas while ensuring a safe trip.

April (Diamond)

You’ve probably seen or perhaps own a diamond, which is the April birthstone. Diamonds are one of the world’s rarest jewels and is an emblem of purity and perfection. They are 58 times harder than any other mineral on the planet plus diamond coated blades and bits can cut or grind through almost anything which makes them valuable.

Diamonds are a pure carbon lattice that comes in a variety of colours ranging from yellow to red, pink, green, and blue. The ones you should look out for however, are the colourless diamonds, which are incredibly rare and expensive.

May (Emerald)

The birthstone for people born in the month of May is emerald. The term “emerald” comes from the Greek word “smaragdus,” which means “green” and provides inspiration, balance, wisdom, and patience.

Brazil, Colombia, Zambia, and Afghanistan are all rich in emeralds. Because high-quality emeralds are extremely rare, most emeralds are heat treated to intensify their green hue. Cleopatra was known to have a passion for emeralds, and throughout her reign, she claimed possession of every emerald mine in Egypt.

June (Pearl or Alexandrite)

If you were born in the month of June, pearls are your lucky birthstone. Pearl is derived from the French word perle, which means “to lead.” According to history and the myths, pearls are symbolic of wisdom gained through experience.

A natural pearl forms when an irritant works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk secretes a fluid to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating is deposited on the irritant until a lustrous pearl is formed.

Here are the first six months of birthstones and their meanings. Do keep a lookout for the next 6 stones for those born in the second half of the year!
