Bring Home A Taste Of Japan With Snacks From Shizuoka Prefecture

Travelling to Japan may not be possible yet for most of us but we can always enjoy some snacks from Shizuoka Prefecture in the meantime. Known for their mikan oranges and one of the largest producers of green tea in Japan, Shizuoka is also home to the World Cultural Heritage Site of Mount Fuji with an abundance of nature that stretches from the mountains to the seas.

Thanks to Singapore Home Cooks, an array of its best produce are being flown in to Singapore so the public can get their hands on them all from the comforts of their own home. Here are some regional specialties you can look forward to:

Shizuoka Products

  • Green Tea Powder Pen “Chakki”

Green tea lovers rejoice as Shizuoka’s famed green tea powder is now available in a convenient pen-type dispenser, patented internationally as “Chakki”. Soon to be available in 3 flavours [Green Tea (green pen), Houjicha (orange pen) and Oolong (black pen)], simply add hot water and powder into a cup to prepare your drink. Convenient and perfect for those who are on the go.

  • Bonito Flake Chips Yuzu

A staple snack in Japan convenience marts, bonito flakes has an additional health benefit as it is non fried, low in calories that is big on taste and minus the guilt. The Bonito Flake Chips Yuzu is a mildly seasoned snack that is extremely popular with more than 20,000,000 servings of it already sold in Japan. Try it to find out what the hype is all about.

  • Mikkabi Mandarin Orange Jelly Sorbet

Made from real Mandarin orange juice from Mikkabi-cho, this sorbet jelly comes complete with pulp for real bite and taste. Making its first appearance in the Singapore market, it can be eaten frozen as a sorbet or thawed out as a jelly, presenting two delicious ways to enjoy the treat.

  • Saba Ramen (Soy Sauce Flavoured)

The first Japanese food that usually comes to mind for most Singaporeans is ramen. Known for their Saba (mackerel) ramen, the Mackerel Shoyu Ramen is made with fresh fish and mackerel extracts from the Yaizu area. Free from preservatives and additives, this ramen is a healthier choice and contains no pork, no lard nor alcohol.

  • Shizuoka Mikan Buns

These Mikan shaped buns are filled with a mixture of white bean paste and mikan jam that is sweet and full of mikan aroma. A popular product of Ujihara Seika, a producer of the sweet fruits for over 60 years, it is a great snack on its own, or have it with strong black or jasmine tea.

  • Izu Shrimp & Wasabi Crackers

Did you know that Shizuoka Prefecture is also one of the birthplaces of wasabi? These rice crackers come with a twist as it is made with 30% shrimp for an extra savouriness and dusted with Mazuma wasabi powder from Izu-Amagi for a piquantness that will prove highly addictive – perfect for lovers of spice.

With a total of 28 different specialty items that will be available for the first time in Singapore, these items along with many other prized Shizuoka products will be available for sale to the public via Singapore Home Cooks Facebook group live show on 4 October 2021 8pm.
