Do you want to learn how to make plastic model kits? Building model kits is a fun activity since no other hobby allows you to construct scale replicas of actual or fictional objects with such accuracy. Picking up your first model kit, though, can be quite intimidating. So, lets start off with the basic, shall we?

What is a plastic model kit?

A plastic model kit is a scale model made of plastic that is sold as a kit and constructed by hobbyists for static display. A model kit can depict a variety of subjects, the most common of which being military vehicles and robots.

Different models kits such as robots, have different types of grades which determine the difficulty of the builds as follows:

  • High Grade (HG) kits are the most widely built kits since they’re simple to construct, have a lower price range (usually around $12 – $50), and a large selection to choose from.
  • Real Grade (RG) are a very new addition to the Gunpla (Gundam Plastic Model) scene. Introduced in 2010, RG kits are known for their attention to detail, such as articulation and a realistic approach, as well as a large variety of decals.
  • Master Grade (MG) models differ in size and details from those of HG kits. The inner skeleton is used in MG kits to help with articulation and durability. Of course, MG kits have more technical pieces than HG kits, but all of the extra attention to detail pays off once the kit is completed.
  • Perfect Grade (PG) on the other hand is one of the most expensive kits on the market, with a scale that stands out in any collection. Not only do you receive a great model kit, it is also very detailed, down to the finger movement of the models. Do expect and plan to spend a few weeks putting one of these together that will be well worth your time.

What do the numbers or scale mean?

When you purchase a model kit, a series of numbers or scale ratio is usually provided. For example, what’s the difference between 1:144 and a 1:24? The number on the left represents the model; while the number on the right represents how many times the model was scaled down in relation to the original.

Where do I buy plastic model kits in Singapore?

Polystyrene plastic is used in most model kits and is considered one of the most important raw materials used in the majority of scale models nowadays. If you would like to start a hobby of creating your very own model kit collection, here are some my favourite stores in Singapore:

  • Hobby Point Bras Basah | #03-37B, 231 Bain St, Singapore 180231
  • Hobbymate | #06-04, 14 Arugmugam Rd, LTC Building C, Singapore 409959
  • Hobby Art Gallery | #01-44 91, Sunshine Plaza, Bencoolen St, Singapore 189652

What are the tools needed?

After getting a model kit of your liking, you would need some handy dandy tools to work with. Some items you should start with are:

  • Sprue cutter also known as nippler (To remove the parts from the sprue)
  • X-Acto Knife (To trim the edges and cut decals)
  • Sandpaper (Smoothen the edges of the parts you’ve cut)
  • Plastic Model Kit Glue (Depends on the type of model kit you decide to build)
  • Cutting Mat

Finally, be patient!

While creating model kits is enjoyable, it is also a talent, and mastering it takes time. So, when you’re just getting started, remember to take it slow. Take a break between each stage to consider how you want to approach the steps ahead. After a few hours of concentration, watch as your masterpiece slowly comes to life! It will all be worth it in the end so start on a model kit today!
